November 17, 2009 Exam 4 is on Friday. It will cover lecture material from Powerpoints 21 through 24 (text chapters 10, 13, 14, 16, 17). I'll be leaving for a conference this morning at 11, so if you have any questions please email me and I'll check my email as often as I can. You can also leave a message on my office phone, but I'll check e-mail more often.

November 6, 2009 Sherry Leis from the National Park Service will be speaking on Fire Ecology in Africa this afternoon (Friday 4 pm in Temple 3). Another interesting lecture is coming up next Tuesday,
November 10, 7:30PM-8:30 PM in Temple 2. Dr. John Heywood is
speaking on a very important subject in Biology: sex. “Birds do it, bees do it. Even educated fleas do it.” But why?
Sex feels perfectly natural to us, but when we take a look at the
details it turns out to be a very bizarre and seemingly inefficient
way of reproducing. And sex is certainly not the only game in town;
many types of living organisms can make exact clones of themselves
by various types of asexual reproduction, and some do so
exclusively. Nonetheless, most animals and a strong majority of
plants are sexual, so there must be some benefit to sex that is
quite general. I will spend about half of my talk convincing you
that sex is bizarre, and the second half exploring some of the
current hypotheses for the evolutionary origin and subsequent
maintenance of sex in higher plants and animals. Come get some sex
education of a totally different kind! |

| 10-31-09 I hope that you all had a fun Halloween. Some did, some didn't. Test scores are posted here. On Monday we'll start on the genetics of viruses and prokaryotes (Chapter 13). | ||
| 10-28-09 I touched up the practice exam to make it current with what we covered- the only questions I changed were 16 and 27. | ||
| 10-26-09 Exam coming up this Friday. We're not quite caught up to the schedule in the syllabus, but you should have read through Chapters 9 & 10 at this point. I'll try to get through lecture set #20 by Wednesday. | ||
| 10-20-09 I linked Set 17 and 18 today (Chapter 9, 10 material) - this should keep us busy for a week or so. | ||
| 10-19-09 A little confusion on the Powerpoint slides- Set 16 has slides on transcription & translation that I rewrote in Set 17. Didn't mean to leave those in set 16...but no harm done (except the trees cut down to print them out!) | ||
| 10-18-09 Midterm grades are submitted this week. They don't mean much at this point in the semester- just an indication of trends so far. There is time left to do better! The midterm grades that I turn in are based on your highest lecture exam score and attendance (2/3), and lab score to date (1/3). | ||
| 10-10-09 Exam scores are posted here. Average score was 74%, Median was 76%. Next week we start with DNA & molecular genetics | ||
| 10-5-09 Class will NOT meet on Wednesday. I have recorded lecture for you, and that material will be included in the test on Friday (see below). Don't be confused by the chapter assignments on the practice test- its an old one. | ||
| 10-4-09 Good morning- Exam 2 will be on Friday. You don't have to bring anything to class except a #2 pencil- I'll supply the answer forms. The test is taken mainly from lecture. Use the practice test to see what sort of questions to expect. I will also look at the practice questions in the text (see the text reading assignments in your syllabus (Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) so be sure that you can answer those too, IF they related to the topics I covered in lecture. There are just 2 questions from Chapter 6 on enzymes & energy (that material was mostly on the last exam). I'll be at a meeting on Wednesday, so I'll record that lecture and put in on this website. | ||
| 9-21-09 Test scores are posted here. If all goes according to plan, I'll return your answer sheets on Wednesday. | ||
| 9-16-09 Good morning- Exam 1 is scheduled for Friday. Use the practice test to see what sort of questions to expect. You don't have to bring anything to class except a #2 pencil- I'll supply the answer forms. The test is taken mainly from lecture. However, I will also look at the practice questions in the text (see the text reading assignments in your syllabus (Chapters 1,2,3, and 6 in part) so be sure that you can answer those too. | ||
| 9-8-09 Tuesday night. I'm back. I put up the rest of slide set 5 and set 6 tonight. See you tomorrow. | ||
|
9-2-09 I'm going to be out of town Thursday 9/3 to Monday
next week. I'm going to give a lecture at Auburn University
and then visit some colleagues at the
Alabama Aquatic Biodiversity Center. So...I've recorded
lecture(s) for you in Powerpoint. The
sets labeled "narrated" have sound
files imbedded. Play them in Powerpoint on a computer with speakers
or headphones & you should be able to hear my disembodied voice.
Please get through all of these narrated files before Wednesday next week. I will start lecture on Wednesday assuming that you've studied them. Have a great weekend!
