IMAGES OF TRAVEL TO THE
UNITED KINGDOM
JULY 2009

In July 2009, Dr. Hickey and his wife traveled to London where he lead a seminar focusing on relations between Taipei and Beijing at the University of London's excellent Taiwan program (headed by Dr. Fell).  While in the UK, they traveled to other areas of the country

Tourists in China love to pose like this, so I have adopted the
practice. I also like to pose next to road signs--a practice that
I learned from my late father-in-law.  This image is from Bath, which
is probably the nicest city in the UK.

I was able to meet some leading political figures while in the UK.

IMAGES OF TRAVEL TO TAIPEI,
HONG KONG AND MACAU
JUNE 2009

In June 2009, Dr. Hickey and his wife traveled to Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau. While in Taipei, Dr. Hickey met with government officials and presented a paper on American policy toward the rapprochement between Taipei and Beijing at an international conference. In Hong Kong, he met with academics to discuss the changes in cross-strait relations. And on a free Saturday afternoon, they went to Macau to check it out.

This is a group shot of the conference at
National Chengchi University.  It was very hot that day and I have
no idea why I was laughing (maybe Dr. John Hsieh said something funny).

Dr. Hickey met with Dr. Su Chi, ROC National Security Adviser,
while in Taipei.  In this image, Dr. Su  presents Dr. Hickey with a copy of
his new book.

Dr. Hickey also met with officials at the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and presented them with a banner from Missouri State University

IMAGES OF TRAVEL TO SHANGHAI, NANJING
AND HANGZHOU, CHINA
MARCH 20-30, 2009

In March 2009, Dr. Hickey and his wife traveled to the People's Republic of China.  While in the Chinese mainland, Dr. Hickey conducted research on topics related to the rapprochement between Taipei and Beijing.  He also delivered a lecture on cross-strait relations at the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies (where he taught classes in 1989-90). And Dr. & Mrs. Hickey enjoyed a "fact finding tour" of Hangzhou. It was their first return to that city since 1990.  Below are some images from this adventure.
