Ch. 5a portrays the courage of young Philip, his devotion to his dog Argos, and introduces new contract verbs with stem ending in alpha.
The old contract verbs, like φιλέω, were e-stems. And we have a new example to remind us how these work, ζητέω, seek/look for.
It conjugates as follows:
ζητέ-ω --> ζητῶ ζητέ-ομεν --> ζητοῦμεν
ζητέ-εις --> ζητεῖς ζητέ-ετε ---> ζητεῖτε
ζητέ-ει --> ζητεῖ ζητέ-ουσι--> ζητοῦσι
(imperative)ζήτε-ε --> ζήτει (infinitive) ζητέ-(ε)εν --> ζητεῖν
Now the new a-stem contracts follow the model of τιμάω as follows:
(stretch out the vowels and you can feel your way through the contractions α + ε --> ᾶ α + ο --> ω)
τιμά-ω --> τιμῶ τιμά-ομεν --> τιμῶμεν
τιμά-εις--> τιμᾶις or τιμᾷς τιμά-ετε --> τιμᾶτε
τιμά-ει --> τιμᾷ τιμά-ουσι --> τιμῶσι
imperative τίμα-ε --> τίμα infinitive τιμά-(ε)εν --> τιμᾶν
Conjugated like τιμάω in the new vocabulary are
βοάω ‘shout’ and ὁράω see.
Homework:
1) Practice the new endings with ὁράω.
(Get it in your head; then try to write it out)
2) Then do the exercises 5β-γ on p. 57.
3) As time permits, study vocabulary and read the passage, pp.54-5.
