Lampito’s Doric.
Henderson gives a detailed descripion of the Doric dialect represented in this play (xlvi-li).
But for now just scan over it and focus on the following, fairly regular features:
ā does not change to η, and genitive plural -ῶν fom -ά-ων is usually -ᾶν
as in line 93 (‘Who has assembled this armada of the women?’)
τίς δ' αὖ ξυναλίαξε τόνδε τὸν στόλον/ τὸν τᾶν γυναικῶν;
ε or η often = ι , and θ is often represented by σ, as in ναὶ τὼ σιὼ
(Attic ναὶ τὼ θεὼ, ‘by the two gods’)
ζ = δδ as in γυμνάδδομαι = γυμνάζομαι, ‘exercise’. μύσιδδέ = μύθιζε, ‘tell’
(where Attic might use μυθέομαι --> imperative μυθοῦ)
Doric vocab. κα = ἄν, ποκα =ποτε
ποτὶ = πρὸς. ποττὸ =πρὸς τὸ(ν).
As in lines 117-18,
ἐγὼ δὲ καί κα ποττὸ Ταύ̈γετόν
γ'
ἄνω
ἔλσοιμ'
ὅπᾳ μέλλοιμί γ' εἰράναν
ἰδεῖν.
‘I
would go (Attic
ἔλθοιμι ἄν)
to (mt.) Taugetos and up (it), so that (lit. ‘whereby’: ὅπᾳ
= ὅπῃ
where Attic would use ὅπως)
I might at least see peace.’
pronouns, ἁμέ / ὑμέ = ἡμᾶς / ὑμᾶς. So line 87, ἵκει ποθ' ὑμέ, ‘she comes to you’,
would be in Attic, ἥκει πρὸς ὑμᾶς.
