Greek 101 —                 PracticeQuiz 1 

(based on Ath. chh. 1-2, esp. Readings 2α -β; exx.2α-β & 2ε-η)

 

Use this practice to review and test your level of preparation.

The quiz itself will follow the same format  (but shorter)

 

Α) Write the Greek translation (from the left) beside the English phrase.

 

ἄγεις                                 I do work                      ___________

B.  Translate the following, Greek to English and English to Greek:

 

1) ὁ Ξανθίας ἐστι δοῦλος ἀργός· 

          ὁ δὲ Δικαιόπολίς ἐστι δεσπότης χαλεπός.

 

2)  The slave is strong, but the work is long.

 

3) ὁ αὐτουργὸς φιλεῖ τὸν καλὸν ἀγρὸν,

                   τὸν δὲ πόνον μακρὸν οὐ φιλεῖ.

 

4) The master leads the slave; the slave drives the ox.

 

 

 

C. Translate the following phrases Greek to English:

 

ὀ οἶκος ἐστι καλός

βαδίζεις πρὸς τὸν καλὸν οἶκον

φέρε τὸ ἄροτρον!

ἐλαύνει τὸν βοῦν

ὁ δὲ βοῦς βαίνει βραδέως

 

 

D.  Again, write the correct Greek translation beside the English phrase.

(Remember, without preposition,  genitive, -ου means 'of';   dative, -ῳ  = to/for)
