καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν.

 ἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ἐν                              custom, (so) that, release         39.1

 τῷ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὖν ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν βασιλέα τῶνἸουδαίων;                       passover

 ἐκραύγασαν οὖν πάλιν λέγοντες, Μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν                                              shouted         40.1

 Βαραββᾶν. ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής.                                                                                robber

   Τότε οὖν ἔλαβεν ὁ Πιλᾶτος τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ                                                                     19.1.1

 ἐμαστίγωσεν. καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται πλέξαντες στέφανον                     whipped, weaving, crown

 ἐξ ἀκανθῶν, ἐπέθηκαν αὐτοῦ τῇ κεφαλῇ, καὶ ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν        thorns, purple robe

 περιέβαλον αὐτόν, καὶ ἤρχοντο (= ἦλθον) πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον,

Χαῖρε, ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων· καὶ ἐδίδοσαν αὐτῷ ῥαπίσματα.                    blows/beatings

 Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πάλιν ἔξω ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς,                                                            4.1

 ῎Ιδε, ἄγω ὑμῖν αὐτὸν ἔξω, ἵνα γνῶτε                                                                        Look!  so that...

             ὅτι οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ.

 ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἔξω, φορῶν τὸν ἀκάνθινον                                 φορέω=wear/bear 5.1

 στέφανον καὶ τὸ πορφυροῦν ἱμάτιον. καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, ᾿Ιδοὺ, ὁ ἄνθρωπος.                  

 ὅτε οὖν εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται                                                                                 6.1

 ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες, Σταύρωσον σταύρωσον. λέγει αὐτοῖς                         crucify (aor.imp)        

 ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ σταυρώσατε,

ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐχ εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν.

 ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, Ἡμεῖς νόμον ἔχομεν,                                                   law  7.1

 καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὀφείλει ἀποθανεῖν, ὅτι υἱὸν θεοῦ ἑαυτὸν ἐποίησεν.                 he must

  Ὅτε οὖν ἤκουσεν ὁ Πιλᾶτος τοῦτον τὸν λόγον,                                                                    8.1

 μᾶλλον ἐφοβήθη  (=ἐφοβεῖτο),

 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν καὶ λέγει τῷ                                                              9.1

 Ἰησοῦ, Πόθεν εἶ σύ;                                                                                           whence/where (from)

                  ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπόκρισιν οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ.                                                              answer

 λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς; οὐκ                                                        speak 10.1

 οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ἀπολῦσαί σε                                   know,  authority, ἀπολῦσαί=to release

 καὶ ἐξουσίαν  ἔχω σταυρῶσαί σε;                                                                                                  

 ἀπεκρίθη [αὐτῷ] Ἰησοῦς, Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν κατ'                                                                    

 ἐμοῦ οὐδεμίαν  εἰ μὴ ἦν δεδομένον σοι ἄνωθεν·                                                given, from above

 διὰ τοῦτο ὁ παραδούς μέ σοι μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει.                             error/fault (<ἁμαρτάνω)

 ἐκ τούτου ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐζήτει  ἀπολῦσαι αὐτόν·  οἱ δὲ                                                            12.1

 Ἰουδαῖοι ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες, Ἐὰν τοῦτον ἀπολύσῃς,

 οὐκ εἶ φίλος τοῦ Καίσαρος· πᾶς ὁ βασιλέα ἑαυτὸν

 ποιῶν ἀντιλέγει τῷ Καίσαρι.

 

Ὁ οὖν Πιλᾶτος ἀκούσας τῶν λόγων τούτων ἤγαγεν                                                           13.1

 ἔξω τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ βήματος εἰς τόπον                                     bench/court,  place

 λεγόμενον Λιθόστρωτον, Ἑβραϊστὶ δὲ Γαββαθα.                                              called, in Hebrew

 ἦν δὲ παρασκευὴ τοῦ πάσχα, ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη. καὶ                                  preparation, hour, sixth

 λέγει τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις, Ἴδε ὁ βασιλεὺς ὑμῶν.

 ἐκραύγασαν οὖν ἐκεῖνοι, ῏Αρον ἆρον, σταύρωσον αὐτόν.                                          take (him) 15.1

λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Τὸν βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω;

 ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς, Οὐκ ἔχομεν βασιλέα εἰ μὴ Καίσαρα.

 τότε οὖν παρέδωκεν αὐτὸν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σταυρωθῇ.                                                     be crucified 16.1

  Παρέλαβον οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν·

 καὶ βαστάζων ἑαυτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὸν                                                        bearing 17.1

 λεγόμενον Κρανίου Τόπον, ὃ λέγεται Ἑβραϊστὶ Γολγοθα,

 ὅπου αὐτὸν ἐσταύρωσαν, καὶ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἄλλους δύο                                                         18.1

 ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν, μέσον δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν.                                                    this side and that

 ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ                                                inscription 19.1

 σταυροῦ· ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον, Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων.          written

 τοῦτον οὖν τὸν τίτλον πολλοὶ ἀνέγνωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων,                       <ἀναγιγνώσκω=read 20.1

 ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν ὁ τόπος τῆς πόλεως ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς·                                   near, where

 καὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον Ἑβραϊστί, Ῥωμαϊστί, Ἑλληνιστί.

 ἔλεγον οὖν τῷ Πιλάτῳ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων,                                                              21.1

 Μὴ γράφε, Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἀλλ' ὅτι  ἐκεῖνος εἶπεν,

Βασιλεύς εἰμι τῶν Ἰουδαίων.

 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Ὃ γέγραφα, γέγραφα.                                                          I have written 22.1

  Οἱ οὖν στρατιῶται ὅτε ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν                                                                 23.1

 ἔλαβον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐποίησαν τέσσαρα μέρη,                              (outer) robes, portions

 ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ μέρος, καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα. ἦν δὲ ὁ                                     tunic (under garment)

 χιτὼν ἄραφος, ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν ὑφαντὸς δι' ὅλου.                            seamless, woven in one piece

 εἶπαν οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Μὴ σχίσωμεν αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ                                        split/tear 24.1

 λάχωμεν περὶ αὐτοῦ τίνος ἔσται· ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ [ἡ λέγουσα],      cast lots, be fulfilled

Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς                                                          divided (in portions)

   καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον.                                                                         lot(s) 5

 Οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται ταῦτα ἐποίησαν.

 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἡ μήτηρ                                                (there) stood 25

 αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, Μαρία ἡ τοῦ

 Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή.

 Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα                               standing by  26

 ὃν ἠγάπα, λέγει τῇ μητρί, Γύναι, ἴδε ὁ υἱός σου.                                                   ἀγαπάω=love

 εἶτα λέγει τῷ μαθητῇ, Ἴδε ἡ μήτηρ σου. καὶ ἀπ'                                                                      27

 ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας ἔλαβεν ὁ μαθητὴς αὐτὴν εἰς τὰ ἴδια.                                             for his own

 

  Μετὰ τοῦτο εἰδὼς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤδη πάντα                                                               realizing  28

 τετέλεσται, ἵνα τελειωθῇ ἡ γραφή, λέγει, Διψῶ.                                 were fulfilled, I am thirsty

 σκεῦος ἔκειτο ὄξους μεστόν· σπόγγον οὖν μεστὸν τοῦ    there was a pot full of sour wine, sponce

 ὄξους ὑσσώπῳ περιθέντες προσήνεγκαν αὐτοῦ τῷ στόματι. hyssop (herb), wrapping, brought

 ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν,                                                                                30.1

 Τετέλεσται· καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.

  Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι, ἐπεὶ παρασκευὴ ἦν, ἵνα μὴ                                                                         31.1

 μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ, ἦν

 γὰρ μεγάλη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου, ἠρώτησαν                                                    asked

 τὸν Πιλᾶτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη καὶ ἀρθῶσιν. have their legs broken, be removed

 ἦλθον οὖν οἱ στρατιῶται, καὶ τοῦ μὲν πρώτου κατέαξαν                                                  32.1

 τὰ σκέλη καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου τοῦ συσταυρωθέντος αὐτῷ·

 ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐλθόντες, ὡς εἶδον ἤδη αὐτὸν                                                                  33.1

 τεθνηκότα, οὐ κατέαξαν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκέλη,

 ἀλλ' εἷς τῶν στρατιωτῶν λόγχῃ αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν                                        spear point, side

 ἔνυξεν, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ.                                                                       pierced

 καὶ ὁ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν, καὶ ἀληθινὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν      the one who saw bore witness, true

 ἡ μαρτυρία, καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει, ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς πιστεύ[σ]ητε.                   trust

 ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ, ⌞1᾿Οστοῦν                                                       bone 36

 οὐ συντριβήσεται αὐτοῦ.                                                                                          shall..be broken

 καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει, Ὄψονται εἰς ὃ ἐξεκέντησαν.  they shall look, the pierced (him)

  Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἠρώτησεν τὸν Πιλᾶτον Ἰωσὴφ [ὁ] ἀπὸ                                                      38.1

 Ἁριμαθαίας, ὢν μαθητὴς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ κεκρυμμένος δὲ διὰ                                             concealed

 τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ                               fear, that he take up the body

 Ἰησοῦ· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν ὁ Πιλᾶτος. ἦλθεν οὖν καὶ ἦρεν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ.                       granted

 ἦλθεν δὲ καὶ Νικόδημος, ὁ ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς                                                         39.1

 τὸ πρῶτον, φέρων μίγμα σμύρνης καὶ ἀλόης ὡς λίτρας ἑκατόν.       mixture of myrrh and aloe

 ἔλαβον οὖν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸ                                                          bound 40

 ὀθονίοις μετὰ τῶν ἀρωμάτων, καθὼς ἔθος ἐστὶν                                    linens, spices, as custom

τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἐνταφιάζειν.  ἦν δὲ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη κῆπος,       to entomb, garden

καὶ ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μνημεῖον καινὸν ἐν ᾧ οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς ἦν τεθειμένος·                 new tomb, laid

 ἐκεῖ οὖν διὰ τὴν παρασκευὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὅτι                                                                  42.1

 ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ μνημεῖον, ἔθηκαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν.

Τῇ δὲ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἔρχεται                                              20

 πρωῒ σκοτίας ἔτι οὔσης εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ βλέπει                        early, dark,  tomb/monument                                

 τὸν λίθον ἠρμένον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου.                                                                    removed (< αἴρω)                                             

 τρέχει οὖν καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον καὶ πρὸς                                                           2.1

 τὸν ἄλλον μαθητὴν ὃν ἐφίλει ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ λέγει

 αὐτοῖς, ῏Ηραν τὸν κύριον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου, καὶ οὐκ                                                        (< αἴρω)

 οἴδαμεν ποῦ ἔθηκαν αὐτόν.                                                                                                    know

 Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητής, καὶ ἤρχοντο εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον.

 ἔτρεχον δὲ οἱ δύο ὁμοῦ· καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς                                                                          4.1

 προέδραμεν τάχιον τοῦ Πέτρου καὶ ἦλθεν πρῶτος εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,                    swifter (than)

 καὶ παρακύψας βλέπει κείμενα τὰ ὀθόνια, οὐ μέντοι εἰσῆλθεν.     looking/peering, linen wrappings

 ἔρχεται οὖν καὶ Σίμων Πέτρος ἀκολουθῶν αὐτῷ, καὶ                                                 following

 εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον· καὶ θεωρεῖ τὰ ὀθόνια κείμενα,                                       lying (there)

 καὶ τὸ σουδάριον, ὃ ἦν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, οὐ                                             (face) shroud  (?)

 μετὰ τῶν ὀθονίων κείμενον ἀλλὰ χωρὶς ἐντετυλιγμένον εἰς ἕνα τόπον.                  rolled up

 τότε οὖν εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ὁ ἄλλος μαθητὴς ὁ ἐλθὼν                                                                     8

 πρῶτος εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐπίστευσεν·

 οὐδέπω γὰρ ᾔδεισαν τὴν γραφὴν ὅτι δεῖ αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῆναι.             knew (< οἶδα)

 ἀπῆλθον οὖν πάλιν πρὸς αὐτοὺς οἱ μαθηταί.                                                                          10

  Μαρία δὲ εἱστήκει πρὸς τῷ μνημείῳ ἔξω κλαίουσα.                                           stood (< ἵστημι)         11

 ὡς οὖν ἔκλαιεν παρέκυψεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,

 καὶ θεωρεῖ δύο ἀγγέλους ἐν λευκοῖς καθεζομένους, ἕνα                                       white, sitting         12.1

 πρὸς τῇ κεφαλῇ καὶ ἕνα πρὸς τοῖς ποσίν, ὅπου ἔκειτο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.

 καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῇ ἐκεῖνοι, Γύναι, τί κλαίεις; λέγει                                                             13.1

 αὐτοῖς ὅτι Ἦραν τὸν κύριόν μου, καὶ οὐκ οἶδα ποῦ ἔθηκαν αὐτόν.                            (< αἴρω)

 ταῦτα εἰποῦσα ἐστράφη εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν                                             turned back

 Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν.                           standing (<ἵστημι), knew (< οἶδα)

 λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς, Γύναι, τί κλαίεις; τίνα ζητεῖς;                                                               15.1

 ἐκείνη δοκοῦσα ὅτι ὁ κηπουρός ἐστιν λέγει αὐτῷ,                                           thinging, gardener

 Κύριε, εἰ σὺ ἐβάστασας αὐτόν, εἰπέ μοι ποῦ ἔθηκας  αὐτόν, κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἀρῶ.         (< αἴρω)

 λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς, Μαριάμ. στραφεῖσα ἐκείνη λέγει                                          turning (about)         16

 αὐτῷ Ἑβραϊστί, Ραββουνι (ὃ λέγεται Διδάσκαλε).

 λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς, Μή μου ἅπτου, οὔπω γὰρ ἀναβέβηκα πρὸς τὸν πατέρα·                 touch         17

 πορεύου δὲ πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου καὶ εἰπὲ αὐτοῖς, Ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν

 πατέρα μου καὶ πατέρα ὑμῶν καὶ θεόν μου καὶ θεὸν ὑμῶν.

 ἔρχεται Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἀγγέλλουσα τοῖς μαθηταῖς ὅτι Ἑώρακα τὸν κύριον.
