How to go to war in Greek: along with πολεμέω,

consider the following expressions:

we ‘make war’ = πόλεμον ποιούμεθα

fut.  πόλεμον ποιησόμεθα

aor. πόλεμον ἐποιησάμεθα, κτλ.

we ‘go to war/get into a war’ = εἰς πόλεμον καθ-ιστάμεθα

        future     κατα-στησόμεθα

        aorist              κατ -έστημεν (2^nd aor.)

        impf.               καθ--ῑστάμεθα

‘We go to war with the army we have’ =

καθιστάμεθα εἰς πόλεμον τῇ στρατιᾷ ἣν ἔχομεν

. . . ἥν(τινα) ἂν ἔχωμεν.

Get it? Change both versions to plural, ‘armies’, στρατιαί.

‘We withdraw/relocate from the country to the city’ =

ἀν-ιστάμεθα ἐξ ἀγρῶν εἰς τὸ ἄστυ.

future     ἀνα-στησόμεθα

aorist      ἀν-έστημεν.
