The Murphy article is a brief history of the quests for the historical Jesus. Pay particular attention to the section called "A Life and a Death." The Jesus presented there is very similar to the one I'll present in class. This article was written in 1986 and claimed that consensus had been reached on a number of issues about the historical Jesus. Today, however, some of the best known Jesus scholars would reject several of these once consensus views. With reference to scholars, perhaps the question, "Who do people say that I am?" should always be followed by the questions, "When?" and "Which?."
