The main purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to either a pagan or Hellenistic Jewish biography of another historical figure besides Jesus who was regarded by some as a "divine man" or "savior God." Two of the most famous are Philostratus' Apollonius of Tyana and Philo's Moses. Cartlidge and Dungan have provided you with introductions to these books and some commentary. They also have summarized several large portions of the original texts since these books are very long in their unabridged form. Make sure while reading that you stay aware of when you are reading the real thing and when the summary.
Generally speaking, your instructions are to compare and contrast either Philostratus' depiction of Apollonius or Philo's depiction of Moses with the NT Gospels' depictions of Jesus. You can bring in relevant references to other early Christian texts if you wish, but the NT Gospels should be your main focus. I am purposely not telling you specific things to be looking for. When I first read these books many years ago I was fascinated by them on all sorts of levels. Compare and contrast whatever you find most interesting and significant.
Two caveats: 1) Don't just repeat observations about the relationship and importance of these texts to the NT Gospels already provided by C&D. 2) Don't get carried away and go beyond three double-spaced pages.
