NB: Reading assignments are to be read by the time class meets on the day they are assigned.

Reading: Meeks, ix-17

Perseus is a major online resource for classics.  In addition to having online texts of practically all Greek literature of the classical period, it has much Latin literature and some texts of the Hellenistic period that are important for our subject.  These include Josephus, Epictetus, Diogenes Laertius, Cicero, and Plutarch.

More on Conversion

Reading: Wanamaker, "'Like a Father Treats His Own Children.' Paul and the Conversion of the Thessalonians"

Supplemental Reading:  Lucian, Alexander the Oracle-monger; Death of Peregrine

In 1 Thessalonians 2, Paul assumes an apologetic tone, reminding the church what he and his coworkers were not.  Among other things, the contrast appears to be with religious/philosophical hucksters.  Lucian wrote two delightful skewerings of such types.
