A Little Background Information Education: B.A., M.A. University of Missouri (Columbia, 1966, 1967), PhD, Washington University (St. Louis, 1970). Profession: University professor, researcher, consultant, author, and co-founder of criminal justice programs at the University of Missouri (St. Louis), Ball State University, and Missouri State University. Field Work: Member of the Criminal Justice Planning Agency, U.S. Department of Justice. Consultant to the Indiana and Missouri Departments of Corrections. Taught in a large state penitentiary for six years. Member of the (Missouri) Task Force on Youth Violence and Gangs. Member of the board of various regional and local criminal justice agencies. Publications: Author of the new online book Into the Abyss: A Personal Journey into the World of Street Gangs. Into the Abyss is the product of nearly four years of on-and-off riding with police gang units in the United States, the Netherlands, and England. It includes interviews with gang members, their parents, teachers, counselors, probation/parole officers and others with a vested interest in gangs (politicians, faith- and business leaders, educators).
