Personal Umbrella Policy
A personal umbrella policy offers insurance coverage in excess of your base home, renter's, and/or car insurance. For example, if you have up to $500,000 liability insurance under your home and car insurance policy (a good idea), and you would like to covered for $1,000,000 more, buy that additional coverage as an umbrella policy. It's cheaper and, given today's jury decisions, you just may need it....especially if you have any money accumulating in mutual funds and other investments and your salary is getting "up there."
I encourage you to your insurance agent about the advisability, comparative cost, and usefulness of an umbrella policy. In most cases you can add it on as an inexpensive item attached to your home insurance policy.
