I.
Oral presentation
Due to
be approved by Monday, February 4
Due to
present orally by Tuesday or Wednesday, February 19 and 20
A.
Student will be given time to research and decide on a poem to
present to the class. Their choice of poem MUST be approved by the
teacher. Some class time will be provided for practice, but outside time
will be needed to practice well.
B.
Evaluation of poem presentation will include the following:
1.
It should appear to be fully practiced and memorized.
2.
It should include the use of props.
3.
Presenter must have good eye contact with the audience.
4.
Presenter must have good articulation, expression, and voice
projection.
5.
Presenter must include the poem title and author when making the
presentation.
II.
Poetry Anthology
A.
Poetry rough drafts will be due the day after they are assigned
(refer to daily assignment book for details).
B.
Due as a final draft book (ready for self-evaluation and final
editing) Thursday, February 14
C.
Due as a finish product (ready to be bound) Tuesday, February 19
Class time of 40 minutes per day will be given in this
way:
Ø
Teacher will introduce a style of poetry, teach the elements
of that poetry style; read to the class examples, or have students read
examples from books or Internet sites, as appropriate, create as a whole
class an example of the poetry; the remaining time will be given to the
student to begin creating their own rough draft example(s) of the poetry
style taught.
Ø
Students will be expected to take notes in class for each
poetry style, or keep track of the handouts giving instructions and to visit
and learn from Internet sites provided and to use the Writers Express
handbook as another resource. No extra hand-outs will be provided. If the
student has lost directions or handouts, they are responsible for getting
them from another classmate.
Ø
Poetry drafts are due each day after they are assigned and are
to be handed in on loose-leaf notebook paper, or typed on white paper. It
is recommended that students keep copies they type on their computers at
home for final editing.
Ø
Some typing can be done at school, but keep in mind, no disks
from home can be put into our school machines. If typing is done at school,
it will need to stay on that machine, and it will need to be completed at
school.
Ø
All drafts handed in must have student’s name, #, date
and style of poetry labeled at the top in the right-hand corner.
Ø
If students keep up with daily assignments, they will not have
a great deal of work to do as they put their final anthology together.
Ø
For each style of poetry taught in class, the student should
have at least one example written, edited, and polished. If possible,
several attempts should be drafted for each style because then the student
could pick their “best” to put into the final anthology.
D.
Although anthologies may have more, they MUST have at least 10
original poems included. More poems can be included, but bonus points
will be awarded ONLY if all minimum project requirements are met first.
Of these poems, the
following styles must be represented at least once:
1.
haiku with picture
2.
cinquain
3.
biopoem
4.
emotion/senses
5.
color
6.
favorite place/geopoem
7.
couplet of at least 6 lines (or could be longer)
8.
diamante
9.
concrete/shape poem
10.
free verse
11.
Add to these a copy of the presentation poem, labeled with the title
and the author’s name.
E.
Each poem should carefully follow the poem formula where applicable
and should be written in correct form (diamante should be written in the
diamond formation, for instance), have proper punctuation, capitalization,
look like a poem and not a paragraph, and all spelling should be
correct—even in the rough drafts!
F.
Other requirements for the finished anthology:
1.
One poem should appear on each page in the finished anthology.
2.
Each poem should have a title.
3.
Each poem style should be labeled in the upper right corner.
4.
Each page should be numbered in the lower right corner; also right
above the page number, on every page, include the student’s name#
Example (if
this were a full page):
Couplet
The Pig Jog
She didn’t like to jog
In the middle of the fog
Mrs. J #31
Page 1
5.
Poems can be illustrated, though illustrations are not required,
except for the one haiku assigned in that way.
6.
Anthology must include:
a.
a title page
b.
a copyright page (date, publisher—made up by the student—city of
publication)
c.
a dedication page
d.
a table of contents with page numbers, poem titles and styles
e.
a final page, “About the Author”, telling a short biographical sketch
about the student
f.
a “comment” page at the very end of the book. This will be a blank
page, just labeled “COMMENTS” at the top.
g.
Poetry must be well edited, with no misspellings or other mechanical
errors.
h.
Poems can be NEATLY written by hand, typed, or word processed, using
plain white paper.
i.
Anthology covers will have a title and the name of the author and may
be illustrated.
G.
Books will be bound with spiral binders at school; when working on
the finished pages, please leave at least ½” margin on the side that will be
bound, so the spiral holes will not cut your words out. Books can be bound
at the top or left side.
H.
Other suggestions to “dress up your book”:
1.
Pages and/or covers could be illustrated.
2.
Pages could be outlined in attractive boarders.
3.
Anthology covers could be cleverly titled and designed (for instance,
a book could be designed in a particular shape to convey its title or
theme).
Note: Outstanding, creative, or poems with originality
may be chosen to enter the Language Arts Fair (LAD Fair) held in April for
the southwest Missouri 24-county area. For this reason, deadlines must be
met and format done correctly for each page in the anthology.

I have read the above POETRY ANTHOLOGY PROJECT
requirements and understand that the project has been assigned and is due
February 19 in its final finished form, that some class time will be given,
but daily work must be completed and that some help form us at home may be
required. We also have kept the project requirements information sheet
either at home or know it is in our student’s homework folder for future
reference. I also know that I can check for daily assignments in my
student’s assignment book.

I have shared this information sheet with my parents.
I know that I need to take notes on poetry styles and keep track of any
handouts, keep up with daily assignments, and use the time given in class.
I also know that meeting deadlines will earn me more points on this project,
plus I will have most of the work done when I begin to work on the final
copy of the anthology.
