Sacagawea--Chapter 1   Discussion Questions

1. What state was Sacagawea originally from?

2. What was her real name?

3. How old was she when the story begins?

4. “The Shoshoni were a nomadic tribe. ”Explain what this statement means.

5. Why were the Shoshoni more powerful than other Plains Indians?

6. What are camas roots?

7. What were the three jobs the men had in the Shoshoni tribe?

8. After a buffalo was killed, what did they do with it?

 

9. What does “tanning the hides” involve? (You may have to look this one up in another resource book.)

10. Who in the tribe was in charge of the folklore? Why did they tell folklore?

11. When the Minnetaree warriors caught Sacagawea and other girls and women, what did they plan to do with them?

 

12. How would you feel after walking 500 miles and finding yourself in a tribe where you didn’t understand the language and you now were a slave? Be specific.

13. Compare the new tribe and how they lived with the old tribe of Shoshoni.
