Book Summary for Slavery/Civil Rights Unit        

*Your summary should not be more than two handwritten pages or one typed page in length.

*Write only on the front sides of the paper.

Include these things in your summary. The ideas in Italics are to help you think out what you will include in your summary. They are not to be answered individually. Your summary should be written in paragraphs. Be sure to use topic sentences, support those with detail sentences, and be sure to have a concluding paragraph.

+20 Setting: Where and when in history does the story take place?
           Setting can be discussed in terms of place and time.
For example,

Where does the action happen? What details tell you this? Is it a real place? A place made up for the story? A likely place?
When does the story take place? About what year does the story take place?

+20 Main Character(s) Who is the story about?

Who is the main character?

For example,
      Is it someone who actually lived, could have existed, or were they made up for the story?
You should describe your character physically and the type of person they are…

For example,

What do the characters’ speech, actions, ideas, or appearance tell you about them?
What reasons do the characters have for the things they do? How do the characters feel about each other?
Do any characters learn something important in the story?
Do the characters change their attitudes or behaviors?

+20 Action or Plot: What happens? What is the problem? How is the problem solved?

What is the main idea for writing this historical fiction?
What is the main problem that the characters have?
What do they do to solve the problem? Or, does the problem get solved? Why or why not?

+ 10 idea development – include your prewriting web and draft

+5 for organization (clear beginning, middle, and end—not skipping around with your thoughts)

+5 for voice (Your writing should sound like you are talking to someone.)

+5 for good word choice (Take the time to pick just the right words to express yourself and your meanings.)

+5 for sentence fluency (should read smooth, not choppy, and should not have run-on sentences)

+ 10 for conventions (grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization)
