Water Unit Objectives

At the end of this unit the student will be able to…

Water Cycle

Ø  describe, diagram, and label details of the water cycle (the hydrological cycle)

Ø  explain groundwater, aquifers, springs and karst

Ø  distinguish between point source and non-point source pollution

Ø  describe and explain evaporation, condensation, humidity, transpiration, types of precipitation,

Ø  saturation, water table, permeable and impermeable, bedrock, percolate, surface run-off

Ø  be able to name four different types/forms of precipitation

Watershed

Ø  understand and describe watershed, watershed address, and be able to explain this

Ø  statement,

“We all live downstream.”

Ø  Know that we are part of the Arkansas-Red-White River Watershed

Ø  Understand that watersheds lead into larger watersheds

Ø  Know the terms:  stream, river, tributary, continental divide

Ø  Understand that water on Earth is a finite resource.  We were only provided with so

much water and we have recycled it through millions of years; we will never get more water.

Water  Conservation

Ø  become familiar with water conservation methods

Ø  perform and summarize a home water-use audit

Ø  become familiar with water treatment plants

Groundwater, Aquifers, Point-source and Non-point source Pollution

Ø  Understand that potable (fit for drinking) water is limited on earth

Ø  Explain the difference between potable and not potable water and approximately

Ø  how much of each is available on Earth

Ø  explain groundwater, aquifers, springs and karst
