Welcome back to school!  As you might imagine, much of this week will be spent on learning how to do things in the 4th grade--how to set up our notebooks, desks, norms of behavior, cruising the website to get familiar with what is available there, lunch routines, recess rules, collecting forms, and more.  We won't be in full routine until next week.

On Tuesdays the spelling words will be posted each week since on Mondays I will be giving a pre-test.

Read through the math this week.  If you have a digital camera your child knows how to use, please send it and the USB cable to download with them.  We learn what a polygon is and make observations in school to identify those in our environment.

Sally Foster Gift Wrap fundraiser begins this Friday.  Watch for more information coming home then.

Today, Home Connection (red) envelopes come home with your child. Please empty what is inside, look the materials over, and sign the envelope to send back to school tomorrow, Tuesday. This is a weekly routine.

When Ms. Seibert  (practicum student) and Ms. Lea (student teacher) went through all the hand-ins you gave to us at the meeting, there were missing items for some of you. I realize that your child might be handing them in today, but if you didn't, there will be copies in the HC envelope for you to complete and send back tomorrow.  I like to get all collections done as soon as possible so I can get things organized and wrapped up.  Thanks for doing all the paper work!  I know it all takes precious time and I do appreciate your help.

For dismissal, we will meet you outside (Please do not come into the building and block the hallways.) in front of the building.  Remember to pull up to the first empty space and the teachers will send the children to you.  That way we can ideally fill five vehicles at once to help move the dismissal routine along as quickly as possible.  For the first week, bring a book, magazine or books on tape with you.  Until everyone has time to get their routines down, pick up can be a long process.  Just be patient.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact me by email or call 836-5952 before or after school.

Subjects
math man Math: We will review multiplication skills, work on problem solving and begin our Polygon WebQuest .  You might want to look this over yourself.  It will be introduced on Wednesday this week.  In a nutshell, it is a type of observation hunt to learn about what a polygon is and find examples of them in school. If you have a digital camera you don't mind your child using, please send it with your child on Wednesday this week.  I do have a classroom camera we can share.

Because we do not have card readers in our computers, in order to download pictures would you make sure they also bring their USB cable for the camera ?

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay

Wise parents know the difference
between a manipulating child and one
who is hurting and desperately needs
them to listen and understand.

Kids who don't feel listened-to and
understood by their parents tend
to search for these feelings in
other places--in gangs--in cults--in
drugs--in sex--etc.

Listening and using empathy
is more important
than "fixing" the problem.

Tips for Ending Homework Hassles

One mother said it well: "I'm tired of doing battle every evening over spelling words, long division, and book reports. I thought I was done with this sort of homework when I graduated from school!"

Listed below are some time-tested tips for helping your child with homework:
bullet Help only as long as there is no frustration or anger.

When homework becomes associated with negative emotions, it's no surprise that kids start to view learning as a real drag.
bullet Help only as long as your child is working harder than you are.

Say, "I'll be happy to help you as long as you're working harder than I am."
bullet Avoid sitting with your child when they are about to "get it."

Many kids come to believe that they can only learn new things…or "get it"…if an adult is guiding them every step of the way. Explain this by saying, "Part of my job as your Mom is to help you see that you can learn without me. That's why there will be times when I let you work by yourself."

Thanks for reading!
