Saturday, September 12, 2009, 8:59 AM

Parents:
Loni Harrell and I are putting together a garage sale to be held this coming Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, to support Light the Night.  We will be accepting donations on Thursday afternoon, and will host a pizza and pricing event from 5:30 until 7:00 on Thursday for the 4th graders.  Of course, if you are willing to donate items, you are welcome to bring them already priced.  Mrs. Johnson has agreed to NOT assign homework that evening so that the 4th graders can participate!

The sale will take place at my house at 3906 E. Eastmoor Street.  To get here, take Sunshine east past Sam's Club.  Just after the light at Blackman Road, take the first right onto Brandon.  Then take the second right on to Eastmoor.  We are the last home on the left.

It will be a busy week with both the bake sale and garage sale, but it's all for a great cause!  And, it's also a great excuse to clean my garage!

Hoping to see you Thursday,
Melissa Montgomery

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay

Chores represent the basic
foundation for cooperation
with parents and other authority figures.
Chores are so important to lifelong
success that wise parents win the
battle over them at all costs--for both
themselves and their children.

                     Love and Logic Stories

Chores in the Classroom (and we have them in the 4th grade!)

The most successful teachers create a sense of family in their classroom. Some of them do this out of great gut-level instinct. Others understand the scientific research on human emotional needs. We all need to feel safe, to feel connected to a group, to feel needed, and to feel loved.

Student chores are an essential component of developing this sense of classroom family. One teacher commented:

Years ago, I discovered on accident how important chores are. Because I was getting old and lazy, I decided to put my students to work on the tasks I didn't like doing. They all had jobs such as organizing the books, erasing the board, getting markers, throwing away junk that fell on the floor, etc. One day, a heated argument erupted between two of my tougher students. When I asked what was going on, one replied, "He's doing my job!"

In the book Teaching With Love and Logic, Dave Funk comments on his own growth as a teacher:

I realized that every time I did something for kids that they could do for themselves, I was limiting them in the long run.

Chores aren't punishments! They're opportunities for students to feel great about themselves!

Thanks for reading!
Dr. Charles Fay
