math man Math: We began Unit 2 Using Numbers and Organizing Data on Thursday last week.
Lesson 2.2 Many Names for Numbers: to review equivalent names for whole numbers and name-collection boxes
Lesson 2.3 Place Value in Whole Numbers: to provide practice identifying values of digits in numbers up to one billion; and to provide practice reading and writing numbers up to one billion (I guess we should be going up to a trillion so the kids can understand the U.S. debt better! -smile-)
Lesson 2.4 Place Value with a Calculator: to provide practice with place-value skills using a calculator routine; and to review reading and writing large numbers
Lesson 2.5 Organizing and Displaying Data: to provide practice organizing and displaying data with a tally chart and determining the maximum, minimun, range, and mode (the data number that comes up the most frequently) of a set of data.

Keep reviewing multiplication skills!  Try to get in at least 10-15 minutes of practice per night to get the cobwebs out!

Watch planners for daily assignments.

spelling city logo  Click Here for the spelling list on Tuesday.  Print the list out in D'Nealian handwriting for double the practice--spelling and handwriting!

All students should be practicing their cursive handwriting.  After 1st conferences, I will be expecting them to use cursive at all times (except labeling in geometry).

     Writing: integrated into other subjects

Missouri State seal       Missouri History:   This week chapter 3, The First People includes:
Lesson 2, Mississippian Mound Builders
Lesson 3
, the Plains Indians who lived in Missouri
Lesson 4 the Osage View of the World, including learning more about legends (stories that explain how something in nature came to be, such as why the owl stays up at night or how the land was created)  Students will be writing their own legend.
Review will be on Monday next week; test over the chapter on Tuesday.

Watch for daily assignments in the student planners.

Simon Science      Science:
Force and Motion Unit begins this week.  Ms. Lea will be teaching the unit with my guidance.  We gave a pre-test on Friday to see what the kids already know.  This is a unit where we will learn more about physics and concepts such as: gravity, inertia, friction, momentum, drag, speed, mass and how all are interrelated.

Water Education test was disappointing in some cases to both the students and me.  Instead of having an essay question, I ask the students to draw a diagram and label ten items to show that they understood their meaning.  Mmm...it seems we have a number of students who do not read directions.  Sad, but true.  I have told them that this test had less points than their daily accumulated homework, and if they did their best on each of those, their grade won't be awful.

I included the pre and post test in their Home Connection envelope today. I would appreciate both copies to be returned with a signature on the final test. I want you (and the students have already done this) to see how much they did learn since the pre-test, and that the post test shouldn't have been a surprise since they did see that information at least once!  Encourage your child to really make use of the objectives sheets that come home since they also serve as a study guide throughout the unit.  it was referred to almost on a daily basis.

e    Please check in daily planners for any independent practice activities (homework).

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids

Is Your Teen A Textaholic?

How many text messages is your teen sending and receiving per day? According to the Nielsen Company, the answer is about 80. Yep! Eighty text messages in one day…not in a year…but just one day! It makes my brain…and thumbs…and wallet hurt just thinking about it. To make matters even scarier, a study by AAA recently reported that 46% of teens admit texting while driving. Ouch!

Maybe these studies are flawed, causing these numbers to be inaccurately elevated. Anything's possible. Let's say that teens only send and receive 40 texts per day…and that only 23% of them admit texting while driving. Yikes, that's still high!

Data like this tempts me to do some pretty ineffective things with my kids. These include quitting my job so that I can follow them around all of the time, using duct tape to restrain their thumbs and fingers, moving the family to a cell-phone-free zone within the Arctic Circle, yelling, screaming, etc.

Particularly with teens, all we really have control over is:

bullet How we act around them
bullet What we provide for them
Rather than moving to an igloo, it's far wiser to model responsible cell phone use and to set firm limits over who pays for the phone. This might sound like, "Honey, you may have a phone when you can pay for it. If it will help any, you can just tell your friends that your parents are so old fashioned that they think that talking face to face with your friends is better than texting. And…by the way…we love you and would miss you if you died while texting behind the wheel."

For more tips on navigating teenage trials, get your hands on our Teen Package. If it doesn't completely change your life, return it for a full refund.
