Repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was highly unpopular in the South and West.  Although many Democrats and Republicans in the regions favored "free silver," only the People's Party had endorsed the measure in its 1892 platform.  Populists expected the "free silver" issue to spur major growth in their party and began to emphasize it.
