Even with the reduced voter turnout of an off-year election, the Populist vote increased by more than 40% in 1894.  Democratic party losses were catastrophic.  But, the Republican Party actually gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives with this election.  The small Populist contingent held the balance of power in the Senate.
