In the Congressional elections of 1894, the Populist vote increased by more than 40%.  Democratic party losses were catastrophic and Republicans gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives.  The small Populist contingent held the balance of power in the US Senate.  A fluid three-way political struggle for power seemed probable for the all important 1896 general election.
