Welcome, New 4th Grader and Parents!
(Remember, even if you are not new to Greenwood, you are new to the
fourth grade!)
Here it is almost the end of summer! Where did all the time go?
In fun, relaxation, and rejuvenation, I hope. I’m looking forward
to a great year of learning with some really special kids (and
parents)—YOU!
Kids, while you are still home, relaxing, begin thinking about your
personal academic goals and what you can do to reach them. (Jot some
down on paper). We’ll be talking more about what you have decided
in class. I am looking forward to seeing
you on Monday, August 25, 2008 between 8:00-8:20 a.m. Just
come directly to the room that first day. Give yourself enough
time to organize yourself before class, which begins at 8:30.
Normally, you will come to the classroom at 8:15 to get organized for
class. If you arrive before 8:15 in the mornings after the first
day, you will report to the cafeteria where you will be supervised until
8:15.
In order for you to start watching the sales for school supplies, I
have a list below of the materials you will need.
Your new partner in learning,
"Mrs. J" ( Mrs.
Shae Johnson)

Parents:
The classroom meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 20 from
6:00 – 7:00. Please plan to attend without children. I will
go over our schedule, routines, curriculum, and be there to answer any
questions you might have. I will also have sign up lists for parties, I
will collect the dismissal information sheets, you can hand in your PTA
membership forms (sent to you with your Greenwood in Review newsletter), and I will need to collect a check from you, too.
I have ordered subscriptions for each of the children for Time for Kids
and National Geographic Explorer. The cost for both
of these wonderful publications is $10.00. We order planners for
the students. They are used for writing their assignments each
day. The cost of the planner is included in the amount below. If you want to write
just one check made out to Greenwood 4th grade, the total amount will
be $TBA.
You will need to purchase text materials for math from the Missouri State
bookstore—Math Tool Kit pouch; 2007 ed. of Everyday Fourth Grade Math Student
Materials set (fuchsia colored), and the 4th Grade Everyday
Math Study Links workbook (fuchsia colored), Missouri, Our Home
(textbook)*, plus the items listed on
the following materials list below. When you go to the bookstore,
go to the Customer Service desk for your books. They will not be on the
shelves! They are there because other people come in and buy our ordered books, leaving
us short. Hopefully, this method will make the books available to
only our Greenwood students.
I am looking forward to meeting with each and every one of you. We
are sure to have a wonderful year together in 4th grade,
where everyday is a learning adventure!
Sincerely,
Shae Johnson
:: Materials List ::
Please purchase the following (and PLEASE KEEP MATERIALS VERY BASIC).
I do not allow materials that are like toys. They can become very
distracting. Our storage area is very limited, too.
Note: I have purchased pencil cases for each student, so there is no
need to buy one. This pencil box will house 2 pencils, a grading
pen, the highlighter and an Expo marker.
1.
1 jump drive (also called thumb drive, flash drive). You can get
them for $10 to $20 anywhere they are sold. I recommend that you
get one that has a cap that will not get lost or one that is retractable. They have them now
as necklaces, bracelets, key chains, etc. We won't use these every
day, but keeping one in the backpack would be very handy indeed when
they are needed. I have seen them at Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart,
office supply stores, such as Staples, our Baker Bookstore on campus,
and others.
2.
One designer, laminated pocket folder to be used to keep loose-leaf
notebook paper stored, labeled with your name and "PAPER"
3.
One designer, laminated pocket folder to be used for homework, labeled
with your name and "HOMEWORK"
4.
1", 3-ring view binder, either white or black. We will
individualize by putting something in the front view section later.
These run about $3.00 and can be purchased at Wal Mart, Target, K-Mart,
or any of the office supply stores in town. DO NOT purchase large
notebooks or zippered. They are not necessary.
5.
one black and white (or other colored) COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK. This
will be used for journaling in various subjects, but especially for
science experiments for keeping records during experiments and writing
conclusions after experiments.
6.
WIDE-LINED (not college ruled) notebook paper. (Put some into
each of your paper and homework folders, leave the rest at home for
refills or we can store your extra here at school for when you run out.)
7.
To put inside your binder: purchase reinforced 3-hole dividers.
You will need at least 6 of these. They
should be labeled, WRITING, WORD STUDY, MISSOURI HISTORY, MATH, SCIENCE,
OTHER
8.
#2 pencils (bring only 2 pencils at a time to school--otherwise they get
lost, misplaced, or there is not enough storage room for them at school
in your desk.)
Note: Please,
DO NOT bring mechanical pencils! They really distract from your
learning time
when they need reloading.
9.
1 red, green, or purple ball point pen to be used for grading and
proofreading/editing papers.
10. One large eraser for the BIG mistakes.
11.
two white board markers. Get the wide tipped,
red, green,
black or dark blue, and make sure they are the Expo
markers (NOT the Expo 2; they do not erase easily).
I have whiteboard erasers in the room, so you don't need them. (Our
erasers look like white socks, but are really erasers!) I launder them every two weeks so we have clean "erasers".
12.
One supply box that will fit ALL of the following:
a. a
lidded pencil sharpener (used only for sharpening colored
pencils since they cannot be
sharpened in our classroom with the electronic sharpeners; they clog up
the works)
b. a
pair of sharp scissors, about 4-5" long
c. box
of colored pencils (Please sharpen them at home so they are ready to
use.) OR a box of 24 crayons. (You won't need both.)
You will not need markers for school.
d. glue stick and medium sized bottle of Elmer's School Glue Gel
or School Glue
e. one yellow highlighter
13.
1- 12"/30 cm ruler: Inch side should note increments to 1/16 of an
inch; centimeter side should note millimeters. Try to find a ruler
that is a solid and NOT A SEE THROUGH. It is easier on the eyes to
see the increments on a solid ruler. Find a ruler where the
beginning mark (0) is on the ruler, not on the edge of the ruler itself.
Do not get the flexible rulers!
I4.
I will have for purchase your day planner/assignment book. (See
cost in the letter above.) You do not need to buy an
assignment book. This style of planner will be used in 4 -
8 grades at Greenwood. They will be used to record
daily assignments. THIS IS A MUST! We spend time this year
developing good study habits, learning how to write down assignments,
learning how to budget time, and meeting deadlines. Assignments
are recorded daily, first thing each morning (and added to, or checked
off as completed as done, as the day progresses.)
15.
Book bag, tote bag, or rolling tote bag, labeled with your name.
These make carrying materials to and from home easier.
16.
A lunch container for morning snacks and lunch (if you bring your own
lunch).
17.
A personal -sized insulated sports drinking container that has a pop-up
sip top to use for drinking water. (This is the only type of water
container that will be permissible to use on the desk top.) We learn the
importance of drinking at least 8 - 8oz. glasses of water per day,
important to nutrition. That is very hard to do unless you hydrate
throughout the day.)
18. If your drinking container is not insulated, then bring a
coaster that soaks up moisture to keep on your desk.
Unless we are having a party, no pop or carbonated beverages are
allowed at school during the day or for lunches. You will
need to purchase milk available in the lunchroom or drink water.
Be careful of pre-packaged fruit juices. You need to drink only
those made from real fruit and not those with ingredients beginning with
corn syrup or fructose. Most fruit drinks are loaded with simple
carbohydrates and not nutritional for a well-balance diet.
18. A pair of gym shoes to be used in wellness (PE) class. Avoid
black-soled shoes that leave marks, and avoid clog-like shoes.
They can be dangerous to wear when running and active.
19.
To keep at home in a study area: a ruler, a math drawing compass,
a protractor
Note: Please avoid novelty school supply items. Keep materials
cheap, durable, and as basic as possible. Our storage areas are
small and that sort of item crowds them, plus they get "misplaced"
or missing, or distract the learner from lessons. Anything
resembling "toys" will be sent home or confiscated by the teachers
anyway, so just don’t bring them.
We have scratch paper (I call it
"Think Paper"), staplers, staple removers, etc. in the room. It is
not necessary to bring these items. Label all belongings with
permanent markers—Sharpie-brand markers work nicely for labeling.
I hope this list makes shopping easier. I’m trying to get it out
early enough so you can participate in the back to school sales that
have already begun. If you have any questions, please call me at
home at 581-5459, or at school, 836-5952. You can also get me by
e-mail at ShaeJohnson@missouristate.edu
To help with some often used materials, please bring the following:
Last name A-G; bring a regular sized box of Kleenex or Puffs, or
any generic brand tissues. We will station these around the room to
share.
Last name H-N; bring a bottle of hand sanitizer. On the
desks, we keep one bottle per partnership to share.
Last name O-R; bring one box of quart sized freezer zip-lock bags
Last name S-Z; bring a roll of absorbent paper towels
Because our room seems to go from very warm to very cold at
times, you might want to bring a lightweight cardigan, jacket, or
sweatshirt, labeled with your name, to keep at school.
