Math:
Unit 3 Multiplying,
Dividing, Number Sentences and Algebra
Lessons this week include
multiplication
and
division facts using the fact triangles.
Please make sure those come to school
each day, and I will make sure they go
home each night in order to practice the
facts. Students should learn to
master all multiplication basic facts as
well as the division facts.
We begin timed multiplication tests this
week, and the students will only compete
against themselves. They will have
3 minute tests that are divided into two
parts. The first minute is done in
pencil and no problems can be skipped.
The next two minutes are done in pen and
students can answer in any order they
choose. The one-minute pencil time
is recorded on a personal longitudinal
graph and represents a speed score; the
2-minute pen score is also recorded on
the graph and represents the accuracy
score. Longitudinal graphs are
kept in the students' binders.
We will go on a world tour trip to
Cairo, Egypt on the continent of Africa
this week, learn how to use the time
zone map and read average climate
charts. We also learn how to
figure out air distance using a globe,
tape measure and convert inches to
miles.
Do-Anytime Activities for this unit:
C
Make up number sentences with correct
and incorrect answers. As your
child to put next to the sentence a "T"
if the answer is correct and an "F" if
the answer is incorrect. For
example, try 5 * 6 = 35 (F); 6 * 2 + 4 =
16 (T); 4 * (2 + 5) = 13 (F).
C
Continue practicing multiplication and
division facts by using Fact Triangles
and fact families or by playing games
from the Student Reference Book.
Check daily planners for more assignment
details.

understand our state and ways we can
highlight the Ozark Highlands for our
St. Louis via video conference on
Friday, November 21.

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About
Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay
The more we lecture, threaten,
and yell about nasty looks, the more
our children learn that
nonverbal barbs are an effective way
of controlling others and
getting an entertaining show of
frustration and anger.
Never let a manipulating child
see you sweat!
It's simple. Don't fight
with your kids over nasty looks
if they are actually doing
what you want! Just say,
"I know you don't like this,
but thanks for doing it for me
anyway. I love you."

Love and Logic Stories
|
Tomorrow, October
16, is "Get Smart about
Credit Day." With the
current financial
crisis, teaching kids
about how credit works
is more important than
ever.
TEEN CREDIT CARDS-DO LEAVE HOME
WITHOUT IT?
Dad: (teasingly) "Have
you made your list for
Santa?"
Brianna: "Santa's for
kids, Dad. I'm 10 years
old. I don't need to
make a list this year. I
just want one thing."
Dad: "One
thing?!"
Brianna: "Yep!"
Dad: "Well that's really
admirable! Especially in
these materialist and
gluttonous times. What's
the one thing?"
Brianna: "A credit
card!"
Brianna, like many of
her peers, understands
enough about Dad's shiny
little plastic card to
know that it can buy her
anything she wants. But
in this case, it's what
she doesn't know that is
even more important.
Listed below are some of
our opinions on the
matter:
Dad would be wise to
give Brianna lots and
lots of practice
borrowing and paying
back loans on time in
full. Kids who get those
kinds of learning
experiences will
eventually become credit
card–wise… if we allow
them the chance to both
succeed and fail with
money tools that don't
carry the risk of "buy
now, pay later."
Love and Logic teaches
that it's not a good
idea to teach kids how
to spend money they
don't have. Wise parents
do not co-sign for
credit cards, or allow
their children to use
their credit cards,
until they reach the
legal age to have their
own. Introduce your kids
to cash first, followed
by prepaid and debit
cards, as training
wheels for a credit
card.
We hope your college age
sons or daughters are
armed with a solid
understanding of what
credit means before they
receive their first
credit card
solicitation.
Bottom line: It's not
the credit card, but
fiscal responsibility
that our children
shouldn't leave home
without!
Learn more about
preparing kids to become
credit card savvy in our
book,
Millionaire Babies or
Bankrupt Brats?
Thanks for reading!
