Check daily planners for more assignment details.

Study for your spelling test at Spelling City.com  Click Here for spelling list.  Choose the top link "find a list", then enter "Shae Johnson" and you will go directly to list one. You can bookmark this site as one of your favorites.  Each week we have a listing, the new one will be posted.  Try the games and activities, too, to give practice learning the words.      Writing:

Research:  We participate in the Polar Bear video conference with scientists who are in the arctic regions working with polar bears.  This conference is on Tuesday, October 28 from 12:30-1:30.  You are welcomed to join us in this new adventure!

We visit the secondary class museum to learn more about Ancient Greece from 10:00-10:45 on Wednesday.

Missouri History:   On Tuesday we will share the products we produced as a result of the Regions of Missouri WebQuest. Then we will begin some research about our Ozarks Highlands, SW region to share with some classrooms in St. Louis via video conference in November.  Much of this gathering and research will have to be done outside of class.

Each of the class members are creating the areas they want to present at the video conference.  Linked is a sheet of the many ideas the students have already brainstormed.  I want them to pick what they are most interested in doing (and they can work in groups), then proceed to find info on that topic, take pictures, gather artifacts, make maps, etc. to present at the video conference on Nov. 21.

I am developing a list of research links to help the students find information about the topics that interest them on Research Links.  If you have other links you know might help us out, please send the URLs to me to post.

Watch for daily assignments on planners.

Science:   We are now learning about rocks and minerals.  The unit objectives will be posted in next week's newsletter and a hard copy given out to the students.

We will be using the Earth's Surface textbook as a basis of our study. Watch for daily assignments and readings.

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay

Wise parents don't do
special things for kids who treat
them like barnyard waste.

When you use an effective technique,
be thankful when your kids get mad and
throw fits.  This is how you will know
your approach is working.  Stick with it!
In the long run, you'll be glad you did!

Love and Logic Stories

This week, Dr. Charles Fay discusses how parenting is a marathon, not a sprint, and how important it is to conserve your energy along the way. Parenting is a life-long task…

Finishing the Race…and Enjoying It at the Same Time

Have you ever met a "sprinter parent"? Like athletes competing for the gold in a fifty-yard dash, they throw every erg of their energy into trying to deal with each instance of misbehavior. Determined to raise great kids, they spend almost every moment trying to correct their youngsters' behavior.

Here's the problem: Parenting is a marathon…not a 50-yard dash! Those who start the journey as sprinters quickly run out of energy, get frustrated, and view parenting as painful.

"Marathon parents" know how to pick their battles. Because they know that parenting is a life-long task, they ask the following questions when they deal with misbehavior:

Is this behavior dangerous in any way?

If my child continued to do this for his entire life, would it really be a problem?

Is this behavior a chronic problem?

Is this a battle I can win right now without first getting support or ideas from others?

If the answer to these questions is "No," wise parents give themselves permission to rest, relax and reflect. By doing so, they preserve the energy needed to address problems with definite "Yes" answers. In our fun little book, Love and Logicisms, we provide 100 short parenting truths that help us determine the difference between the battles that must be won and those that don't need to be. Knowing the difference gives us the wisdom to finish the race…and enjoy it at the same time.

Thanks for reading!
Dr. Charles Fay
