Congratulations to you all!

I have received only one entry!  I am really disappointed!  We have so many wonderful artists in this class.  All they have to do is a bit of research and then draw and color with vivid colors.
There is still time left to get your entry in!
There is no failure worse than the failure to try!
See link below for details.

Did you know?
...that I always try to give tests first thing in the morning (except spelling/vocabulary tests)?
...that students can earn 3 points for each test that is handed in signed by their parents?
...that I always list on the board in the morning where and what to hand in each day?
...that I list numbers on the board for missing work and the students can then hand them in?
...that last week I told the students that if they don't get their work in immediately when numbers are listed, they will get zeros from now on?
...that we have had anywhere from 2-12 students in at recess finishing up work that they "forgot" to do the night before.)  This is going to stop.  They need the exercise, and I need the time to work with students who need re-teaching of concepts and/or time to grade or to work with my college students.
...that students are keeping track of their science and Missouri history notes in their binders now?
...that I always announce at the end of the day what materials to pack?  The students are to "tune in"., listen, and stack what is needed on their desks as I make those announcements.  Then I call by rows for students to pack their things in backpacks.  We spend approximately 10 minutes doing this task at the end of the day.
...that I always tell the students to pack their homework folders and their planners (even on the weekends)?
...that I have had more and more students coming back to the room for materials they "forgot".  I tell them they are making the choice not to listen, and they should be making better choices.
...that whenever questions are assigned in math, Missouri History and science, answers are to be written in complete sentences in such a way that the reader knows what the question asked?
...that when using notebook paper, holes are to the left and labels on papers are to be written in the upper right-hand corner with name#, date, and subject and page number?
...that when papers are stapled, they should be stapled in the upper left corner?

The majority of the students are making great choices and have learned the daily routine!  Congratulations to them for doing the right thing!

Subjects
     Math:
Unit 3  Multiplying, Dividing, Number Sentences and Algebra

Look for the Family Math Letter for Unit 4 in Home Connection envelopes.
Unit 4   Decimals and Their Uses  We begin this unit on Wednesday.  With my supervision, Mrs. Wendy Ramsey, our site-based methods practicum student teacher will be teaching math on some Tuesdays and Thursdays while in our classroom this semester.  (She will be teaching other subjects, too.)  We are looking forward to having her learn more about teaching as she teaches us about decimals and their uses.

Check daily planners for more assignment details.

Language Arts
Reading:   Students should be reading at least 30 minutes per night!  Fill out book reports as books are completed.  go to:  Reading Links for forms.

Using the latest National Geographic Explorer Magazine, students will be practicing comprehension skills as we read and learn about Death Valley, it's history and it's geography.

Word Study:  This week lesson 2.10 Vocabulary

Study for your spelling test at Spelling City.com  Click Here for spelling list.  Choose the top link "find a list", then enter "Shae Johnson" and you will go directly to list one. You can bookmark this site as one of your favorites.  Each week we have a listing, the new one will be posted.  Try the games and activities, too, to give practice learning the words. Test will be on Friday.

Writing: On Wed. Brenda Bradshaw's 425 college students will be working with a small group of students.  They have developed lesson plans to practice on our students based on some cold writing these 4th graders did for them earlier in the semester.

Writing and Editing Checklist  To use with any writing work whether it is typed or handwritten.

Research:  Ozark Highlands Video Conference Project Groups
Independent Project: individuals or groups working on topics having to do with the Ozark Highlands for our Nov. 21 video conference with St. Louis school. Students are to be researching and finding images and information on their own that will help them put together a presentation.  They are to keep sites, images, etc. either on their desktops at school or on their flash drives.  It is important to have all materials collected so we can work on final products.  I will be able to give time in class for the groups to develop and rehearse their presentations during the week of Nov. 17.

Missouri History: We continue learning about the first Missourians with the use of chapter 3 in the textbook.  So far we've learned about the Paleo group, the Archaic group, and the Woodland group.  We continue this week by learning more about the Cahokians, the Mississippian Mound Builders, the Hopewells and the relationship they all have to the Native Americans who lived in our area, esp. the Osage.

Test over chapter 3 is next Wednesday, Nov. 12

Watch for daily assignments on planners.

Science:   We proceed with doing the mineral hardness test, using the Moh's scale of hardness this week with hands on activities using the Moh's scale as we classify minerals. We  study sedimentary rock using a sedimentator ( a tube of water with various sized sediments in it) to learn how sedimentary rocks are formed.

Click here to find the Minerals and Rocks Objectives and Study Guide

Texts used for this unit include the green science book, Earth's Surface and the orange booklet, Sedimentator student guide. Students are expected to keep track of these books and booklets.  They are only lent to them to use.  We will take notes on experiments and have those notes in the binders.

This week, Dr. Charles Fay introduces his new book, "Parenting Kids To Become the People Employers Really Want and…America Desperately Needs," with a tip about what to do when parents don't always agree.

Don't Let Your Kids Play Divide and Conquer

Since the beginning of time, kids have devoted themselves to the creative testing of parental limits. I suppose it's our job to set the limits, and it's their job to take them for a test drive. If they rev their motors, and our boundaries come crashing down, we're in big trouble…and so are they!

One common way they test our parental fortitude is by pitting us against each other. In families where there is marital tension, divorce, or remarriage, this type of testing can reach epic proportions. Maybe you've heard one of the following:

Dad lets me!

Mom said I could.

Dad never listens. He's mean.

Mom yelled at us!

Why do you make me do that? Mom doesn't.

Not fair. I'm telling Dad!

Resisting the urge to rescue your kids from the "mean" parent is critical! So is avoiding the trap of arguing with them about how you are right and the other parent is wrong. Wise parents stick to their limits and repeat with loving humor:

Thanks for letting me know about that. Aren't you lucky to have parents who are different from each other?

Kids don't need parents who are clones of each other. They do need parents who respect and support each other even when they don't agree about everything. For plenty of additional ideas on this issue, check out my new book, Parenting Kids To Become the People Employers Really Want and…America Desperately Needs.

Thanks for reading!
