Subjects
Math:   We begin our study of mathematics with a Polygon WebQuest this week.  The project requires digital photos.  I have two digital cameras in the classroom, but if your child is familiar with yours, and you wouldn't mind them bringing it to class, that might help our data collection.  Go to Math Links for more information.

A copy of the Study Link (hereafter referred to as "SL") 1.1 Family Letter should be in the Home Connection Envelope this Monday for you to read.  Please look over the website so you can find all the helpful links I have included for you and your child.

Do-Anytime Activities
Unit 1
Help your child identify real-world examples of right angles (the corner of a book) and parallel line (railroad tracks).
Help your child compile a shapes scrapbook or create a collage of labeled shapes.  Images can be taken from newspapers, magazines, and photographs.
Language Arts
Reading:   Students should be reading at least 30 minutes per night!

Word Study:  This week we will work with analogies in the classroom.

     Writing:

    Research:

Missouri History:  We will be working on identifying the locations of states on a U.S. map; we will begin reading in our Missouri History books in Chapter 1.  Watch assignments in planner for more details.
Science:  We begin our water education unit.  Please see objectives sheet that will given to your student this week. The objective sheet reflects what I want your child to learn and what they will be responsible for on the unit test.

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay

Wise parents know the difference
between a manipulating child and one
who is hurting and desperately needs
them to listen and understand.

Kids who don't feel listened-to and
understood by their parents tend
to search for these feelings in
other places--in gangs--in cults--in
drugs--in sex--etc.

Dear Shae,

This week's Insider's Club article is an amusing story from Jim Fay about setting limits with your kids.

Have a great week!

Mom's Book Serves a New Purpose

Mom left our conference with a new way of handling her kids, who routinely trashed the house, expecting her to clean up and prepare dinner while they were glued to the television.

She walked into the house with a book in hand, saying, "Wow, guys! What a mess. I'll start dinner as soon as it's cleaned up. I've got a great book I want to read. I'll be in my room reading. Let me know when the house is clean."

"No way, Mom! We have to eat right away. You have to drive us to our game this evening," they argued.

"Oh, guys. You worry too much," she answered as she headed to her room.

Her kids came into the room several times pleading with her to come out to fix dinner—without success.

Finally they sent the oldest in to say, "Mom. Are you on something? What have you been smoking?"

"Yeah, pal. I'm not on drugs if that’s what you mean. But as you see, I've gone on strike. I'll no longer be your servant. If I don't take good care of myself, I don't know who will. Let me know when the house is clean."

She tells us that she keeps a book in her car. Each night as she arrives home from work she has it in her hand. When the kids see the book they yell, "Wait, Mom. The house is clean. Can you start dinner now?"

Mom is learning how to set limits, and her kids are learning how to be more responsible.

Thanks for reading!
Jim Fay
