We earned $406.00 with our bake sale!

Thank you, everyone for all the baked goods.
A special thank you to the mom's who helped supervise.
They were Jill Martin, Stacey Cornella, Tanna Johnson, Alison Miller, and Lisa deLeon.

We couldn't have been so successful without the support of our parents!

You can start dropping items off at the deLeon's the week of the 15th, so start cleaning and boxing things up, getting them ready for the sale.  Riley deLeon is going to be pricing items, but if you are so inclined, you may label prices on things before you hand them over.

Where? 162 W. Stone Meadow Way, Springfield

Remember, the garage sale is on Friday and Saturday, the 26 and 27 from 8:30-1:00 p.m.  Volunteers are needed. Contact Lisa.

At this writing, we are up to $1437 on the electronic webpage!  Keep it going.
IMPORTANT:
When you collect money, please keep it until October 1.  If you can at that time, add it to the electronic funds page with your credit card.  If you don't want to do that, then please convert all cash into a check made out to LTN and put into the white collection envelope with your name and parent signature on it. I really don't want any cash handed into me, if possible because then I have to write checks for each amount myself.
Join our Light the Night Team!

Subjects
Math:   Math lessons this week include 1.6 Drawing Circles with a compass; 1.7 Circle Constructioins; 1.8 Hexagons and Triangle Constructions; we will learn about radius, diameters, chords, and how to make arcs with a compass.

Go to Math Links for more information.
Check daily planners for more assignment details.
Unit 1 test is scheduled for next Tuesday.  Study Guides will be handed out to the students this Wednesday.

Language Arts
Reading:   Students should be reading at least 30 minutes per night!

Word Study:  This week lesson 1.3  in Vocabulary Study book.

Study for your spelling test at Spelling City.com  Click Here for spelling list.  Choose the top link "find a list", then enter "Shae Johnson" and you will go directly to list one. You can bookmark this site as one of your favorites.  Each week we have a listing, the new one will be posted.  Try the games and activities, too, to give practice learning the words. Test will be on Friday.

Writing: On Tuesday afternoon, students will be doing a pre-writing activity together with Mrs. Murphy, and then they will have some time to get started on a rough draft.  The topic is to tell about where we went on our field trip and what they learned about water and water treatments.  They should include their thoughts, emotions, as well as knowledge they gained. I am looking for 3 paragraphs with topic sentences and lots of supporting details.  This should be a hand-written rough draft.

Research: Today and tomorrow we are having our news forum presentations.  The candidates, Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama are being "interviewed" on specific issues by reporters.  The object of this research was to get the students more familiar with the issues in the presidential campaign.

Missouri History:  We begin working with our Missouri history materials on Wednesday when we take look at the parts of our book, go on a scavenger hunt, then in Lesson one, we learn how to read this book.  We will learn together how to answer Memory Master questions found at the end of each lesson.

So you know, all answers must be in complete sentences, written in such a way as to incorporate the question into the answer.  No pronouns should be used.  As I told you at the parent meeting, writing answers in this manner will allow the students to have another form of note taking to be used for review when tests come up.

Watch assignments in planner for more details.

Science:  We continue our water education unit.  This week, we will concentrate on learning about potable water, point source and non-point source pollution, home water conservation.  We will perform a home audit.

I am in the process of planning a field trip to the water sewage treatment and the drinking water treatment plants in Springfield. The trip may be this Friday or next Tuesday.  Either day, the trip will be in the morning.  More details and cost of transportation will follow as soon as I know when we can take the trip.

Test is scheduled for next Wednesday, September 16.  Objectives listing serves as the study guide.

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay

Wise parents don't
allow words to gain
shock value.
Lectures and threats make
the problem worse.  Wise parents take
the fun out of swearing by
encouraging the use of the "dirty" word
in some other place.
When kids insist on swearing around
their parents, their parents fall back
on the *"energy drain" principle: Swearing drains
energy from the family, but there's nothing
like your kids cleaning the toilets
or staying home from the amusement park to charge it up!

*If you have questions about the "energy drain" principle, stop by the room, and Mrs. J will explain it to you.  It really works in lots of situations!

Love and Logic Stories

Love and Logic does not work unless you use empathy – the compassionate understanding of the child's disappointment, frustration, and pain – when delivering logical consequences.

horizontal rule

Don't Forget the Empathy!

What's the very most important skill in Love and Logic?

That's an easy one for us to answer: Empathy is the key! Without it coming first, consequences won't work.

Empathy is like a high priced sports car…it's powerful but it needs lots of maintenance.

Empathy's also like brightly colored clothes…it tends to fade in the wash.

The most successful Love and Logic folks make it easier to maintain their empathy by memorizing and using just one brief empathetic statement. They also make it more natural by picking one that fits their personality. Listed below are some examples:

How sad…

Oh, no…

Dang…

That stinks…

What a bummer…

That's no good…

Awe, man…

The most successful students of Love and Logic also know that how we say our empathy is far more important than what we say. Actions always speak louder than words.

Our newest CD, "Keeping Cool When Parenting Heats Up" features a conversation I had with Leah Wells about empathy. In it, you will hear how empathy can help keep you calm even when chaos is erupting and your kids are pushing your buttons.

Thanks for reading!
