Announcements
From Sue Baldwin:
This is an update on the Greenwood Review article
regarding Missouri State’s Homecoming parade and
the Greenwood float. At last week's MSU
homecoming meeting everyone was informed, due to
lack of space at Bear Village none of the floats
will be on display this year. The review was
already printed and I need to let parents know.
If
you missed the interview
on KSMU last Thursday on
their Sense of
Community, "Teachers who
make a difference"
article, you can still
hear it at
www.ksmu.org
then click on Sense of

Missouri History:
On
Thursday this past week, we had the
opportunity to participate in a video
conference with some folks in St. Louis
who will be at the historic Old
Courthouse about the Slavery and Freedom
Suits in Missouri during the period of
history between 1820-1850 when most of
these suits were brought to court. The
video conference was well worth our
time! The folks who held the conference
were quite impressed with the Greenwood
questions. The schools listed
below were in on the conference.
1. Pilot Grove Junior High—Pilot Grove,
MO
2. Greenwood Lab
School—Springfield, MO
3. Wiggins Place—Beachwood, OH
4. Mountain Gap Middle
School—Huntsville, AL
On October 28, we will be holding a video conference with
Polar Bears International.
Geoff York will be
holding live teleconferencing from Buggy
One out on the tundra surrounded by
polar bears. Suzanne Coulter has made it
possible for us to make contact with
these folks, and Jason Barlowe, our
computer teacher, has made the contacts
and arrangements for us.
This week we continue to find Missouri's
place in the world by creating
placemats, then learning more how to
locate places on a globe using latitude
and longitude. We continue the
week with Lesson 2 "natural and human
features" of Missouri, Rivers and Lakes
of Missouri, and we may get into Lesson
3, the regions of Missouri.
Volunteers needed!
Next Tuesday, October 7,
in the afternoon, we will be getting a
real "feel" for Missouri as we create
our state with flour and salt dough.
We need about 4 moms or dads to
volunteer to help with this project.
Please call Lisa deLeon if you can help.
Watch assignments in
planner for more details.

Science:
Earthquake Unit
Objectives/Study Guide. We
continue earthquakes this week with
earthquake safety, types of mountains
formed when tectonic plates move and the
history of the largest earthquake on the
continental United States in 1812--the
New Madrid earthquake.
Earthquake test is scheduled for
Thursday this week. Use the
handouts and the study guide, plus the
readings in the Earth's Surface
textbook, p. C2-C15.
On Tuesday this week, Dr. Melida
Gutierrez, will again be in the
classroom, giving an overview lesson
about volcanoes--a preview to our next
unit.Dr.
Melida Gutierrez, geologist from Temple
Hall on campus, came to our
classroom this week and taught an
extremely interesting lesson about
Antarctica. The class really
learned a lot about this huge, cold,
desert continent. We did some map
work, learned about glaciers and
icebergs, how food and trash are
problems that have to be solved when
going to and living on Antarctica during
explorations. We also did an
experiment with glaciers and icebergs.
Much of what
we do will be in class, but there will
be assigned readings, webpage links for
review, and worksheets. Watch the
daily planners for daily assignments. |

Love and Logicisms , Wise Words About
Kids
by Jim and Charles Fay
Never expect that giving concessions
will
bring gratitude. Concessions made
to
demanding kids rob them of the
opportunity
to learn respectfulness, responsibility,
and
how to earn what they want.
To avoid a fight with your kids,
tell them what you will provide, not
what they have to do.
|
Love and Logic Stories
|
Last week, Jim Fay explained the
importance of each family member
doing their fair share of work
around the house. This week, he
shares an idea of how your kids can
help.

MAKE THEM PART OF THE FAMILY
I last wrote about the importance of
kids contributing to the workload of
the family. One of our basic human
needs is to be needed and to be a
part of a family. When children live
their lives as guests in a four star
hotel instead of as a contributing
member of a family, this basic need
is denied. The usual result is for
them to feel increasingly resentful
without knowing why.
One way to help a child feel needed,
important, and valued in the family
is to put him/her in charge of one
family meal per week. This means
planning, cooking, serving, and
cleaning up. Most kids are capable
of doing this by the time they are
eight years old.
Of course the quality of the food
will suffer temporarily while they
are in training mode. But this
changes dramatically as they learn
and become excited about being able
to cook.
Many parents report to us that their
kids resist at first, but soon think
that they enjoy cooking. In many
cases, what the kids enjoy and don't
recognize are the wonderful feelings
of being valued.
Thanks for reading!
Jim Fay
P.S. You can learn more about
involving kids in the family
workload in Pearl #7 in the book,
"Parenting With Love and Logic."
Another good resource is the audio
CD, "Didn't I Tell You To Take Out
The Trash?"
