PHOTOS FROM
DR. AND MRS HICKEY'S VISIT HONG KONG, GUANGZHOU AND TAIWAN
MARCH 22-APRIL 2, 2000

View from the window in our room at the Chinese University
Guest House, Shatin, Hongkong
(Great view, but a small room!)

Dennis and Cheng-May on the campus of the Chinese University
of Hong Kong
("dorm food" is best we've ever seen--we recommend the stir-fried beef rice
noodle)

View of pollution in Guangzhou from our room on the 24th
floor of the White Swan Hotel.
Like much of the 3rd World, China suffers from a severe pollution problem.
(What a mess!)

Like elsewhere in China, the citizens of Guangzhou take a
keen interest in public affairs.
These individuals are reading newspapers posted by Chinese authorities.

We visited a restaurant in Guangzhou that featured many
different kinds of foods.
We chose the lobster!

This is Chen Jia Chi--a shrine for all Chinese named Chen
who happen to live in Guangdong province.
The architecture is incredible--each set of figures on the roof tells a different story!

A wonderful Ivory and Bone Carving exhibit at Chen Jia Chi,
Guangzhou.
This particular piece was carved out of ivory. Bone carvings may be purchased by
visitors.

We searched for the home of Cheng-May's father who left
Guangzhou to fight the Japanese
when they invaded China in the 1930s (he has never returned). We found this sky-scrapper
on the site
of his home. Perhaps he should file a claim with the Chinese government?

These neighborhood characters live on Papa's old street and
had a keen interest in
our quest to find someone from his family.

This is not a team of accrobats!
Rather, its the crew of a moving company in Ghuangzhou
and Cheng-May shot this photo from inside a taxi.

Shopping in the Kowloon district of Hong Kong after
returning from Guangzhou.
We dropped a few Hong Kong dollars in this store!

View from the bus that took us to the new Hong Kong Airport
and from there to Taiwan.

During the visit to Taiwan, Dr. Hickey interviewed Chen
Chien-jen,
Foreign Minister of the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Visiting Papa at his home in Tien Mou, Taipei.

A view of Tien Mou in Taipei.
In the background is the largely empty embassy building and the world famous
Veteran's Hospital.
