AROUND BEIJING

Shortly after our arrival in Beijing, we visited the
famous Bird's Nest which
will host the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games

Unfortunately, this image is a bit grainy. It shows Dr. Hickey with two of
his
students from the American Foreign Policy seminar at the China
Foreign Affairs University (Willow and Michael). Notice that Dr. Hickey is
holding a rubber statue of Chairman Mao. This was a gift from an antique dealer
who sells Cultural Revolution relics at Panjiayuan Market.
America could certainly learn something from the PRC
about how we ought to
recycle
used items. This truck is a only short walk from the university and the
owners purchase used cardboard and plastic bottles. Look at all that
cardboard that would otherwise go into a landfill!
A short walk down the street from the Recycle Truck,
this lady sells delicious breads.
In this image, she is preparing a large onion bread.

Dr. Hickey delivered a lecture on America's Commitment
to Taiwan at Renmin (People's) University
in Beijing to a Standing Room Only crowd of several hundred students and
faculty.
Hanging with the Locals at the Bao Guo Shi "Dirt Market" in Beijing on May Day!
These guys were real characters. As we left, one
shouted, "Please Don't Bomb
Any More of our Embassies!"
The tourist-oriented night food market near Wangfuxing
continues to sell unusual delicacies
to the Western tourists. The Chinese tend to stay away.
Mule burgers (also called Chinese hamburgers) are
actually popular in Beijing.
We did not encounter any Chinese (students,
faculty or others) who would eat these bugs.
But a good number of young tourists from Europe and America do eat them after
drinking
some beers!
While touring the Chinese Nationalities Park with Yiran
Zhou (left), a future graduate student at MSU,
Dr. Hickey was presented with a Chinese cowboy hat as a
gift by a vendor. During his stay in Beijing, other generous
vendors gave him a rubber Chairman Mao statue, a Mao button for his back pack, a
ceramic bust of Chairman
Mao and a variety of other treasures. Americans are not as generous!

VISIT TO NANJING

During his stay in China, Dr. Hickey participated in
the Fulbright Program's
Guest Lecturer Program. After an absence of almost twenty years, Dr. & Mrs
Hickey
returned to the Johns Hopkins Center for Chinese-American Studies in
Nanjing, China. They were very impressed with the changes. This
image shows the
new editions to the Center.
A view from inside the new addition to the center.
While in Nanjing, Dr. Hickey also delivered a lecture
at the Nanjing
University of Science and Technology. In this image, he presents a MSU
banner to Dr. Lee of the university.
We found that some of the "old timers" in Nanjing were
still around. This image shows
Dr.
Hickey with Mr. Zhou (Joe) who owns the famous "Joe's Restaurant" and with Milo
Manley, who is now
an "institution" at the Center
The trip to Nanjing enabled Dr. Hickey to link up with
his old poster collecting buddy,
Mr. Kao. In 1989, Mr. Kao had presented Dr. Hickey with a collection of
cultural revolution handbills as a gift. Some of these may be seen on his
Cultural Revolution
Handbill Website. It was great to see Mr. Kao again and talk about
posters!

IN MARCH, 2008, DR. HICKEY WAS FLOWN FROM BEIJING TO TAIPEI
TO
SERVE AS AN ELECTION OBSERVER DURING THE ISLAND'S
2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. HE SPENT AN ENTIRE WEEK AS PART OF
AN AMERICAN DELEGATION.

DR. HICKEY MEETS WITH DR. SU CHI, PRESENTLY CHAIRMAN
OF THE ROC NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL, DURING THE
RUN-UP TO ELECTION DAY AND SHOWS HIM A "MA FOR
PRESIDENT" BUTTON!

ON ELECTION DAY, THE AMERICANS TRAVELED TO A LOCAL
POLLING
STATION TO WATCH THE COUNTING OF THE VOTES. THEY WERE MOST
IMPRESSED. THE VOTE COUNTING WAS FAST, ACCURATE AND TRANSPARENT. THIS
IMAGE SHOWS AN ELECTION WORKER HOLDING UP A BALLOT FOR ALL TO SEE
AND CALLING OUT THE NAME OF CANDIDATE SELECTED ON THE BALLOT

RESULTS OF A VOTE ARE WRITTEN ON THE BOARD AND TABULATED.

ON ELECTION NIGHT, THE DELEGATION VISITED THE ELECTION
AND REFERENDUM INFORMATION CENTER. BY 7:00 P.M., IT WAS OBVIOUS
THAT MA YING-JEOU, THE KUOMINTANG CANDIDATE, HAD WON IN
A LANDSLIDE
