Research Interests:

Dr. Dennis Hickey is the James F. Morris Endowed Professor of Political Science.  Professor Hickey's research and teaching interests include International Relations, Asian Politics, National Security and American Foreign Policy. He has published roughly fifty scholarly articles and book chapters. Professor Hickey is also the author of four books, Foreign Policy Making in Taiwan:  From Principle to Pragmatism (Routledge Publishers, London, 2007),  The Armies of East Asia:  China, Taiwan, Japan and the Koreas (2001), Taiwan's Security in the Changing International System (1997) and U.S. - Taiwan Security Ties (1994).  In addition to these books and articles, Professor Hickey has contributed op-ed pieces to a number of newspapers including The China Daily, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Star and Taipei Times .  He also has been interviewed by electronic media organizations including China Central Television (CCTV), Cable News Network (CNN) and The Voice of America (VOA), quoted by print media organizations including the Associated Press (AP), Agence France Presse (AFP) and the Singapore Straits Times  and received external grant support from the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and the Pacific Cultural Foundation. In the area of service, Dr. Hickey has served as a consultant for the US Congress, a variety of governmental agencies, think-tanks and private firms and served as Director of the Graduate Program in International Affairs and Administration from 2000 to 2002 and from August, 2006 to 2008.  In 1999, Dr. Hickey was selected by Missouri State University as a University Fellow in Research and he completed a second term as University Fellow in August 2005.  Dr. Hickey has also received university and/or college awards for excellence in teaching (2001 and 2006), research (1997, 1999 and 2005), service (2000 and 2004) and the University Foundation Award for excellence in research (2002). In 2000, Dr. Hickey was elected to the post of Deputy Coordinator of the American Political Science Association's Conference Group on Taiwan Studies and in 2002 he was elected to the post of Coordinator (he completed his term in 2005). During the Spring semester of 2008, Dr. Hickey was a Fulbright Exchange Scholar at the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing, China. He presently serves as a Research Associate at San Francisco State University's Center for US-China Policy Studies and on the editorial board of  two scholarly journals (The Journal of Chinese Political Studies and  Taiwan Defense Affairs) and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Chinese Political Studies.
