Katabatic Resources
Scholarly Books and Articles
- E.B. Holtsmark, "The Katabasis Theme In Modern Cinema" in Martin M. Winkler, Classical Myth and Culture in the Cinema (Oxford 2001), pp. xx-xx.
This article is what we Classics types call a locus classicus: that is, the
place to start when researching a certain topic. The fact that Jack
Holtsmark also directed my 1987 Iowa dissertation on Cicero's orations
is just icing on the cake.
- Joseph Campbell, The Hero with A Thousand Faces (1949)
Eminently readable, highly thought-provoking, revered by thousands upon
thousands, among which I do not number myself. Somewhere along the
trajectory of his legendary career, Campbell made the jump from
synthetical scholar to syncretic swami. Or, more succinctly, jumped the
shark. YMMV, of course.
