Careers in Government

There are a variety of positions related to criminal justice at every level of government - city (municipal), county, state and federal, including various regional positions (several counties joined for political purposes, several states working together, etc.). Finding these positions is made easier by the fact that, given the current emphasis on announcing position openings as widely as possible, they are advertised in many places.

You may find such positions in Missouri by clicking on "Job Seekers" in Missouri Works on the WWW. After you’ve clicked on Job Seekers you will click either on "Job Search Orders" or you can broaden your search by visiting "America’s Job Bank," a continually up-dated, national database of job openings. If you’re looking for a government position in another state I advise that you visit that state’s Web site.

Government positions include such jobs as grant writer/reviewer, program evaluation specialist (evaluating existing programs to determine if government funding should be continued, determining weaknesses and strengths, making recommendations for improvements, etc.), statistician, researcher and criminal justice program administrator. To learn more about government positions related to criminal justice, and the Missouri State Public Administration degree, visit with the faculty in the Department of Political Science here at Missouri State.

There are several benefits associated with working at the state and federal level of government. Typically, retirement, vacation, health and life insurance and other tangible benefits are superior to those found in similar city and county positions. Likewise, merit and job performance are more likely to determine one’s movement up or down the organization rather than personal politics (simply not getting along with a supervisor) or public politics (where changes in the political affiliation of superiors may result in reappointments and losing one’s position).

Visit The Occupational Outlook Handbook for more information related to government positions. You can perform a keyword search to find your desired job. If you are looking for any kind of job (criminal justice, marketing, or travel agent, etc.), check this site!!
