Careers in Planning
So, whats a planner? A planner is someone who may design or oversee a survey of a community's needs so that a public or private agency may plan for future growth. Planners also make projections - the size of the population of a community in the future, how many more schools will the community need in the next decade, how large should the new jail be, etc.
Planners typically work with agencies and other people who have an expertise in an area other than planning. For example, the highway department may hire a planner to help them determine where new roads should be developed. The planner provides insights into directions the community is growing and the highway department provides the expertise for actually building the roads.
Among the many things criminal justice planners do are helping federal and state governments determine what the future needs will be for hiring additional police, building new prisons and jails and/or developing new or more treatment programs.
