Clematis hybrida:  Clematis

Location near campus:  on trellises in Master Gardener's demonstration garden in the Nathanael Greene portion of the Botanical Center (garden located north of Botanical Center building); plus in several yards of homes south of campus.

·         leaves opposite, deciduous, pinnately compound with 3-5 dark green, 2-4” long leaflets

·         rachis of leaf is tendril for clasping objects on which to climb

·         stems are slender, light brown, ridged with angular or star-shaped white pith

·         vine grows fast to 5-10’ height, but little lengthening of vine after that; often cut back to ground every year or every other year to maintain vigor of vine

·         flowers are large (4-7” diameter) with 4-6 showy sepals, deep purple, lavender, pink, maroon or white, depending on cultivar

·         blooms in late spring, some repeating later in summer

·         prefers cool, moist, well-drained, fertile soil—good to mulch root area for best growth & summer survival
