· deciduous, alternate, pinnately compound leaves with 5-9 leaflests; leaflets lanceolate, 2-5" long and ½ as wide
· twigs stout with large terminal buds; bark is smooth light gray until older when large flat ridges form
· grows 40-60' tall and equally as wide, medium growth rate
· nuts are shed easily from husks (compared to black walnut)
· native to Europe and China
· prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils
