Syringa reticulata: Japanese Tree Lilac

·         leaves opposite, deciduous, simple, ovate to chordate; similar in size and shape to common lilac, but slightly pubescent and rough textured on leaf undersides

·         stems stout, shiny brown and bark similar to cherry bark

·         flowers white, fragrant in large terminal panicles in late spring on previous season's growth

·         prefers full sun for best flowering and high organic matter soil, but very soil adaptable

·         medium growth rate

·         grow 20-30' tall and 15-25' wide as a small tree
