Carya tomentosa: Mockernut Hickory, White Hickory

·         similar in appearance to pignut hickory in leaves and bark, but nut is in a large, thick husk like shagbark hickory and actual nut is small

·         twigs are pubescent when young and buds are more orange than other hickories

·         bark is diamond-pattern ridged

·         grows 50-60' tall and 1/3 as wide

·         prefers well-drained, upland wooded areas

·         medium growth rate

·         native to Missouri
