Hosta species and cultivars: Plantain Lily, Hosta

Location on campus:  several species/cultivars are growing in the planting at the southwest corner of Craig Hall, plus hosta can be found in the planting bed behind (to the east side) of the east side of Plaster Stadium, and in several planting beds in the lawn/garden area south of Plaster Student Union.

·         deciduous, simple, alternate, entire-margined leaves with parallel veins; leaf shape is ovate to ovate lanceolate in shape; leaf size is 3-10" wide and 10-24" long, depending on species and cultivar

·         leaf color can be yellow-green, bright green, dark green or variegated with white or yellow

·         foliage height is 12-48" inches

·         flower stalks with lavender or white flowers appear from early summer to early autumn, depending on species/cultivar

·         most cultivars prefer full to at least part shade, moist, high organic matter soil

·         low maintenance for a number of cultivars, once established
