Carroll Chapter 13 Business and Community Stakeholders BSAD 470
I. Two major kinds of relationships come to mind when we think o the interaction between business and its community stakeholders.
A. The first is positive contributions that business can make.
B. The second is the
harm that business can inflict on its community stakeholders.
II. Business can create a positive impact in two ways.
A. Business can donate the time and talents of its managers and employees.
B. Business can make
financial contributions to the community or community organization.
III. Business should have some type of community involvement to benefit themselves and the community.
A. Business must be willing to give the same serious
consideration to human needs that it gives to its own needs.
B. The are six reasons given for why business should become involved.
1. Businesspeople are efficient problem solves. 2. Employees gain satisfaction and improved morale from involvement in community programs. 3. A positive image in the community facilitates hiring. 4. Often a company gains prestige and greater acceptance in a community when it gets actively involved. 5. Social responsibility in business is the alternative to government regulation. 6. Business helps itself by supporting those institutions that are essential to the continuation of business.
C. There are several type of community projects that business can get involved in.
1. One of the mot pervasive is volunteer programs which
reflect the resourcefulness and responsiveness of business to communities in need of
increasing services.
2. In the past decade, literacy programs have become a popular corporate cause.
a. Business see literacy programs as directly related to
their successful functioning.
b. People who are currently functionally illiterate don't stand a chance in our
ever-increasing technology workplaces.
3. Executive loan programs lend corporate managers to assist local governments.
