Sacagawea--Chapter 3  Discussion Questions "On the Missouri River"

1. What is the date that the Lewis and Clark expedition leaves Fort Mandan? Make a note of this date. We will need to revisit it later in the book.

 

2.The expedition sent some critters that had never been seen before to President Jefferson. What three animals were named in the book?

3. How was Sacagawea immediately helpful to the expedition? Hint: This was something she remembered learning from her mother.

 

4. On page 28 and 29, the story tells about the point where the Yellowstone River meets with the Missouri on the border of N. Dakota and Montana. Can you show your partner where they are on the map?
 

5. What river was originally named after Sacagawea? What was it called then? What is it called today?
 

6. Who explored the River That Scolds at All Others? Which way did it go? What did he rename it?
 

7. Who explored the Missouri? How did he know it was the Missouri?
 

8. Today, Great FallsMontana is named after the magnificent waterfalls that Lewis found. Tell what has happened to the "grandest sight" Captain Lewis ever beheld.
 

9. When Sacagawea suddenly becomes ill, Captain Clark cut open one of her veins and let her bleed for a short while. Why did he do this?
 

10. Why was Captain Clark so insistent in taking good care of Sacagawea?
