   Sacagawea--Chapter 8  Discussion Questions  "A Guide to the Yellowstone" 

1.  Why did the Nez Perce set fire to some dry fir trees?

 

2.  Soon the expedition splits into two parties.  Lewis and his group return to explore what?

 

 3.  Clark and his group decide to return to the three forks to explore what?  Can you locate

these two routes on the map?

 

 4.  Where do the two groups reunite?

 

 5.  What was the advantage of both of them taking different return routes?

 

 6.  What was the problem about splitting up?

 

 7.  Find Gibbon’s Pass on the map.

 

 8.  How did Clark find his way through the mountains?  Locate that route on the map.

 

 9.  Sacagawea was Clark’s “pilot through this country”.  Explain what that phrase means.

 

 10.  Bozeman Pass (also known as Sacagawea’s Gap) is located in Livingston, Montana.  Locate on the map.  What was built through this pass in later years?

 

11.  When Clark camped by the Yellowstone, what happened during the night?

 

 12.  What is Pompey’s Pillar?  Locate it on the map (between cities of Custer and Billings, Montana).

 

 13.  Clark’s group travels on the river again, what was the problem they faced that they couldn’t meet Lewis at the designated meeting spot?

 

 

14.  What happens to Sgt. Pryor’s horses?

 



15.  Lewis has a gunshot wound when he arrives back to camp.  What problems had                        his group encountered?
