Native simple perennial wildflower with thick taproots that grows 12-30
inches tall; flowering stems are green to purplish

Plants first form a rosette of lanceolate leaves with smooth margins;
leaves may have some stiff hairs; flowering stems have a few leaves on lower
portion; stem leaves are usually shorter than basal leaves
·
Head inflorescences are 2-3+ inches in diameter, with pink to purplish
ray flowers (“petals”) that tend to hang down from the center of the flower; the
brown to purplish disk flowers form a conical mound in the center of the
flowers; disk flowers have sharp, spike-like projections
·
Bracts below inflorescence in overlapping rows, oval to lanceolate
·
Flowering is from late spring to mid-summer
·
Found in dry prairies, glades; tolerant of sandy, rocky soils
