Amaranthus powellii S. Wats.; Palmer Amaranth: (Bayer Code:  AMAPO; US Code AMPO2)

          ·         Warm-season, aggressive annual weed, with upright pyramidal growth habit

          ·         Similar to redroot pigweed in appearance, except:

                     o   Leaves are smooth, shiny on upper surface, and more pointed than redroot pigweed

                     o   Stems are not rough-textured or hairy

                     o   Has slightly longer terminal inflorescences without spiny bracts sticking out

                     o   Side branches of terminal panicles are longer than redroot pigweed

          ·         Common in cultivated crops, roadsides, non-crop  land

          ·         Can readily hybridize with other pigweeds, resulting in weeds with varying pigweed/amaranth characteristics
