·         rosette forming, simple perennial with fibrous root systems

·         leaves oval, narrowing near attachment to crown

·         larger leaves, purplish leaf base = blackseed plantain

·         smaller leaves, green leaf base = common broadleaf plantain

·         flowers all along an upright spike (not clustered as with buckhorn plantain)

·         blooms spring to early summer

·         reproduces readily by seed
