Chara, Stoneworts: 

·         a type of algae that looks more like a vascular plant

·         has gray-green needle-like “leaves” on rough, gritty, brittle stems

·        has hard bumps or blisters on "leaves"

·         eaves often lighter green than similar-appearing aquatic weeds

·         has musky  or skunky odor if bruised

·         more common in hard, or high alkalinity water
