·         Cool season annual grass frequently in wheat fields and other winter annual crops

·         Has mostly upright, slender, mostly hairless leaves

·         Inflorescence is a spike of stacked spikelets which break apart at maturity

·         Each spikelet is awned, with longer awns on tip spikelets—very unique inflorescence
