Red-Stem Filaree

·         winter annual or biennial in the Geraniaceae (Geranium) family

·         has long, pinnately divided (fernlike) leaves that hug the ground in first  year rosette— rosette  is about 4-8 inches in diameter

·         leaves dark-green, stems reddish-pink

·         second year has ascending stalks with clusters of purplish-pink flowers at top in spring

·         seed pods are pointed with a spiraled “tail”

·         can be found in lawns, perennial crops, pastures--  prefers sandy soils, but can grow anywhere

·         increasing in southwest Missouri
