§ a lower-growing, much-branched simple perennial with smaller, pubescent leaves, compared to biennial gaura
§ native to Midwest prairies and great plains
§ flowers pink to red in dense terminal racemes—usually only a few open at one time
§ not palatable to livestock, but consumed by wildlife
§ not usually much of a problem as a weed
